Senator Bob Bennett, R-Toast, tears up as Utah teabaggers kick his ass.
Right-wingers boot Bennett

<snip>

Left standing were Mike Lee and Tim Bridgewater, both Utah County Republicans who like the tea partiers and 9/12ers just fine. Both claim to be strict constitutionalists who will free Utah from an oppressive federal government, take back federal lands in Utah and repeal health care reform.

Good luck with that.

After the vote, Bennett described the nation's political atmosphere as "toxic." His voice quavered and he teared up a little, then dismissed it by saying he gets dewy at the dedication of a parking lot. His staffers wept and hugged each other, and closed the doors of their suite to grieve among themselves.

The tone was different over at the Democratic state convention, in an opposite corner of the Salt Palace Convention Center (you can imagine the parking situation downtown Saturday).

1. Bennett, who is already PLENTY conservative if you ask me, is dumped
by his State's Puke convention for being insufficiently right-wing.

God, that is scary.

3. I'm trying to decide whether this development is awesome or horrible.
Could there be a backlash and we end up with a Democratic Senator from Utah?

Or, is it symptomatic of a big-ass move to the right of Nazi-like proportion?

I can't decide.

5. I think Teabaggers will end up splintering the GOP even further
which means less votes for the name brand Repukes.

11. In the long run the teabaggers will do the GOP more harm than good.
America is not going hard right.. or hard left, for that matter.

7. Kind of scary.
One can only hope that the vote will be split on our favor.

This is the state has has kept Orrin Hatch forever. :puke:

8. Good question on the hinge. I have no idea how it will shake out but
when fire-belchers bounce an already-too-far-right Republican like Bennett, it would appear that the inmates have taken over the State hospital.

Not a good sign for the GOP nationally when Bob Bennett is considered too "liberal" for convention delegates.

Sheesh.

2. More good news: Democratic primary in June!
The tone was different over at the Democratic state convention, in an opposite corner of the Salt Palace Convention Center (you can imagine the parking situation downtown Saturday).

The marquee race there was between Rep. Jim Matheson, a five-term veteran of the U.S. House, and newcomer Claudia Wright, a former high school history teacher and progressive Democrat who came out of nowhere in February.

It's clear that Matheson lost a lot of friends in the party when he voted against President Obama's health care reform initiative. Wright came in with 45 percent of the delegates' votes to Matheson's 55 percent, forcing a primary in June.

Blue dog versus a progressive!

4. Yeah, exactly, there is that angle.
A progressive senator from Utah?

Could happen.

17. Not in this century
For a Democrat to win in Utah, he/she would have to be Zell Miller-like.

Nevermind, I'll be nice and won't say it, it's Mother's Day. :)

12. Maybe the Tea Partiers will do to the Republican party
what the Naderites did to the Democrat party.

15. I think this shows the basic strength/weakness in the Tea Party movement.
In the last elections they LOST big time. However in a closed convention they removed Bennett from the race.

Therefore: They are strong among their own but when their candidates go before the electorate they lose.

Interesting.
