First U.S. offshore wind farm receives approval
Source: Examiner

After almost a decade of federal study and analysis, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) approved the Cape Wind project, allowing the first U.S. offshore wind farm to move ahead.

Cape Wind is a 130-turbine wind power project on submerged federal lands in Nantucket Sound off the Massachusetts coast.

DOI required the developer of the $1 billion wind farm to agree to additional binding measures to minimize the potential adverse impacts of construction and operation of the facility.

5. Power generated there is 2X the cost of current sources. Be interested if the local utilities
have to buy it and how they pass the costs on

The Cape generates most of its electricty from buring heavy oil or natural gas. Do you think these fuel sources are immune to predictable and severe future price inflation?

Getting electricity from the Cape Wind project could cost consumers a little bit more — but not as much as opponents feared.

Would you pay extra for green energy? An anticipated deal between utility National Grid and the controversial wind farm proposed for Nantucket Sound could add from 47 cents to $1.33 to the average customer’s monthly electricity bill, state officials said.

Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Secretary Ian Bowles said National Grid must agree to pay somewhere between 17 cents and 21 cents per kilowatt hour for the power it buys from Cape Wind to be competitive. At that price, the 130-turbine project, which received federal approval last week, would not only rival conventional energy, it could at times in the future be cheaper.
