Edited on Mon May-03-10 09:41 PM by RobertPlant
For the Democrats I would say that Massachusetts has the best and longest democratic tradition. Since 1924 they have supported a republican president three times: 1952, 1956 and 1984. For 37 years Massachusetts had 2 democratic senators. Massachusetts was also the only state to vote for McGovern in 1972. However, before 1924 Massachusetts was a GOP stronghold. But otherwise I would pick Massachusetts.

For the Republicans I would say that Kansas has the best and longest republican tradition. Hasn't supported a democratic presidential candidate since LBJ. The only times Kansas has had supported a democratic candidate twice in a row was in 1932-1936 (FDR) and 1912-1916 (Wilson). Unlike the southern states, the party has been in control there since it was established in 1854. Also has had two GOP senators for 71 years.

1.  Your second sentence confuses me. The one about MA electing presidents.

2. I think that meant Democratic candidates CARRYING Massachusetts
Which even happened in 1972, when a lot of the people who would later form the DLC did all they could to sabotage George McGovern's fall presidential campaign(and did so solely because McGovern had the gall to beat them fairly and freely for the nomination).

Ken Burch was right, I meant to say that Massachusetts has only voted for a republican candidate for president three times since 1924.
