AG Covers Up Breast On Roman Goddess Depicted On Virginia's Official State Seal

Breast On Virginia Seal Covered Up (PHOTO)

Virginia's attorney general Ken Cuccinelli is hard at work on the important issues of the day -- like making sure the Roman goddess depicted on his state's official seal isn't exposing herself.

The current seal shows "Virtus, the goddess of virtue, dressed as a warrior," with her foot resting "on the chest of the figure of tyranny, who is lying on the ground." She is holding a spear and her left breast is exposed.

Or at least it was exposed. At a recent meeting, Cuccinelli provided pins to his staff with a new seal on which "Virtus' bosom is covered by an armored breastplate," the Virginian-Pilot reported. These new pins were not paid for by taxpayer dollars, Cuccinelli's office insisted.

The original state seal was designed by George Wythe, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and was first adopted in 1776, according to a Virginia state website. But so much for that.

"When you ask to be ridiculed, it usually happens. And it will happen here, nationally," University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato told the Pilot. "This is classical art, for goodness' sake."

1. Did they give her a penis, too?
I mean, if you're going to give her a breastplate, just go all the way and turn her into a man. It seems to be what they want.

5. In a related story, burkas to be sold in Virginia clothing stores
concerned that immoral dress may be the cause of hurricanes, Attorney General has ordered burkas to be made available for purchase in alll stores that sell women's clothing in Virginia.
"These will be top quality burkas," Cucinelli said. He also noted that as yet, wearing burkas will not be mandatory. "We expect women to do the right thing and hide their bodies voluntarily," said Cucinelli.

8. Why are republicans so obsessed with the female body and
controlling that body. Are they afraid that females have much more common sense than they have. In fact I know females have more sense than republicans.

9. Not just Republicans-
Ever seen a breastfeeding thread?

Nope- it's American culture in general that has a psychotic fear of/obsession with/love and loathing for the female breast.

11. I can't figure it out
Our culture, especially those on the right, have a real terror of a woman's breast. There was a law suit in my town a few years ago over a restaurant humiliating and throwing out a young woman who was breast-feeding her baby under a large scarf in a back booth of the restaurant. The way she was treated for that simple act that has gone on since mammals first evolved was bizarre.

We have a huge problem in our culture, and the religious right, and the politicians who pander to them, are intent on making it WORSE.

13. It's baffling
Both the reactions on say- the Janet Jackson thing or- and this one blew me away, the "controversial" Baby Talk cover:

"I was SHOCKED to see a giant breast on the cover of your magazine," one person wrote. "I immediately turned the magazine face down," wrote another. "Gross," said a third.

These readers weren't complaining about a sexually explicit cover, but rather one of a baby nursing, on a wholesome parenting magazine — yet another sign that Americans are squeamish over the sight of a nursing breast, even as breast-feeding itself gains greater support from the government and medical community.

Babytalk is a free magazine whose readership is overwhelmingly mothers of babies. Yet in a poll of more than 4,000 readers, a quarter of responses to the cover were negative, calling the photo — a baby and part of a woman's breast, in profile — inappropriate.

One mother who didn't like the cover explains she was concerned about her 13-year-old son seeing it.

"I shredded it," said Gayle Ash, of Belton, Texas, in a telephone interview. "A breast is a breast — it's a sexual thing. He didn't need to see that."

It's the same reason that Ash, 41, who nursed all three of her children, is cautious about breast-feeding in public — a subject of enormous debate among women, which has even spawned a new term: "lactivists," meaning those who advocate for a woman's right to nurse wherever she needs to.

"I'm totally supportive of it — I just don't like the flashing," she says. "I don't want my son or husband to accidentally see a breast they didn't want to see."

Another mother, Kelly Wheatley, wrote Babytalk to applaud the cover, precisely because, she says, it helps educate people that breasts are more than sex objects. And yet Wheatley, 40, who's still nursing her 3-year-old daughter, rarely breast-feeds in public, partly because it's more comfortable in the car, and partly because her husband is uncomfortable with other men seeing her breast.

"Men are very visual," says Wheatley, 40, of Amarillo, Texas. "When they see a woman's breast, they see a breast — regardless of what it's being used for."

Babytalk editor Susan Kane says the mixed response to the cover clearly echoes the larger debate over breast-feeding in public. "There's a huge Puritanical streak in Americans," she says, "and there's a squeamishness about seeing a body part — even part of a body part."

19. The Goddess of Virtue got off easy.

They were going to book her for indecent exposure, and then she'd have to register as a sex criminal the rest of her immortal life. In Olympus she wouldn't have been allowed to come within 3 miles of Cupid.

“Gay Demon” Exorcist Cindy Jacobs To Share Stage With Virginia GOP Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli

As noted last night on the Rachel Maddow Show, Virginia GOP Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and evangelist Cindy Jacobs will be appearing (and, it would seem, sharing a stage together) at the Freedom Federation anti-health care reform Awakening 2010 conference, scheduled to be held at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia this April 15th and 16th. Noting Cuccinelli’s plan to attend the conference Maddow observed, “A lot of conservative politicians admit they want to repeal health reform, but it takes a brave new Virginia style conservative politician to say they want to repeal health reform while appearing at an event with a faith healer — repeal and replace indeed.”

People For The American Way’s Kyle Mantyla has posted footage of Cindy Jacobs’ attempts at faith healing of HIV and cancer during a March 2010 conference in Dallas but Jacobs is not just a faith healer. As shown in video footage from the 18th International Transformation Network Institute on Nation Transformation conference, held October 2008 in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Cindy Jacobs claims the power to cast out gay demons. During an October 7, 2008 evening ceremony at the conference Jacobs conducted a mass exorcism, casting out not only “spirits” of homosexuality but also spirits of pornography, addiction, lust, bisexuality, and perversion. (below: exorcism of "homosexual spirits" begins 40 seconds into video)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPhurFf2Huw

Cindy Jacobs’ purported exorcism and faith healing powers are part of, writes authority on Christian Zionism Rachel Tabachnick, an entire new health care paradigm emerging on the evangelical right in which the first recourse for almost any malady, imagined or real, is faith healing and exorcism.

Jacobs is also fond, it would seem according to the following account from a book by her close colleague C. Peter Wagner, of burning statues of Catholic saints, rosary beads, Books of Mormon, “totem poles,” and a wide range of other assorted religious and mystical items.

oh and BTW Cindy Jacobs is a leader in the New Apostolic Reformation movement of which Thomas Muthee is part. Remember him exorcising Palin? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grrsRKP8L0s

Meet Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli – America’s Most Powerful Teabagger

http://crooksandliars.com/josh-glasstetter/meet-virginia-attorney-general-ke

Virginia AG Ken Cuccinelli has been in the news a lot lately. You may have heard about the letter he wrote earlier this month to all of Virginia’s public colleges – UVA, VA Tech, William and Mary, etc. calling on them to drop policies banning discrimination against gays and lesbians. He claims they have no legal authority to adopt such policies.

Or maybe you heard Cuccinelli speculate about whether President Obama was born in the United States. In this recently unearthed recording from the campaign trail, Cuccinelli can be heard telling a birther that he might be able to challenge federal laws on the basis of Obama’s birth place:
In another recently unearthed recording, Cuccinelli told a crowd that he’s worried about the government tracking his family. He said he might not register his newborn son for a Social Security number because "it is being used to track you." He also claimed that many other Americans aren’t registering for Social Security numbers for the same reason:

We're gonna have our 7th child on Monday, if he's not born before. And, for the very concerns you state, we're actually considering – as I'm sure many of you here didn't get a Social Security number when you were born, they do it now – we're considering not doing that. And a lot of people are considering that now, because it is being used to track you.

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/03/19/cuccinelli-gay-acts/

Cuccinelli: Homosexual ‘acts’ are a ‘detriment to our culture.’

This month, far-right Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli “urged the state’s public colleges and universities to rescind policies that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, arguing in a letter sent to each school that their boards of visitors had no legal authority to adopt such statements.” The move was so controversial that even Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) slightly backed away from supporting it. In a new interview with CBS 6, Cuccinelli says that gay “acts” are harmful to society:

Q: Do you think that gays — the practice of homosexuality — is a detriment to our culture?

CUCCINELLI: The acts are. You certainly want everybody in your society to be integrated into your society. So, that’s a focus I’d like to take, but there’s a distinction. And it’s one that the General Assembly seems to be wrestling with every year, and we’ll leave that one to them for now.
