The Nation (Pakistan)WASHINGTON –
The United States’ decision to send 50 more military personnel with four new F-16 combat jets to Pakistan has the Pakistani government “shudder with trepidation”, according to a leading American newspaper.
“Pakistan’s military and intelligence services remain highly suspicious about the motives and methods of their US counterparts, a wariness mirrored in the American attitudes toward Pakistan,” The Washington Post said in a dispatch. There are currently about 200 US military personnel involved in security assistance in Pakistan, including a special operations training and advisory contingent.
The Central Investigation Agency (CIA) has also sent additional intelligence-gathering operatives and technicians in recent months.
Plans are underway to establish a joint military intelligence processing centre, the Post said. After an initial period of tension, Pakistani officers are using cross-border intelligence compiled at two joint co-ordination centres on the Afghan side of the frontier.
