MSHA: Anonymous tips, surprise inspections led to 3 Massey mine evacuations since March 24

Federal officials say they evacuated three Massey Energy coal mines in the past month after receiving anonymous complaints about dangerous conditions.

Three surprise inspections resulted in citations for what the Mine Safety and Health Administration calls serious violations.

An evacuation at Massey subsidiary Independence Coal Co.’s Cook Mine in Boone County, W.Va., came four days after an explosion at Massey’s Upper Big Branch mine killed 29 men.

MSHA says that on March 24, it also found serious problems at Spartan Mining Co.’s Road Fork No. 51 Mine in Wyoming County and Inman Energy’s Randolph Mine in Boone County.

Good discussion on Ed Shultz now. Massey's response was to fire workers and some supervisors.

6. Some supervisors got fired
Blankenship and company likely told the supervisors to go in and mine no matter what; and the supervisors got fired.

U.S. Inspects Three Massey Mines, Orders Workers Out

April 27 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration said it inspected three Massey Energy Co. mines for hazardous conditions in response to anonymous complaints, and ordered workers out of designated areas at each site.

Inspectors made surprise visits to the mines in West Virginia, seizing telephone lines at two sites to prevent employees from alerting colleagues, and issued multiple citations for serious violations, the agency said in a statement.

Massey said it fired eight employees and another quit following the agency’s actions.

“Each one of these inspections resulting from anonymous complaints reflects a serious disregard for the safety and health of the miners,” Joseph Main, assistant secretary of Labor for mine safety and health, said in the statement.

“What’s especially troubling is that one of the complaints came in just days after the explosion at Upper Big Branch Mine.”

Regulators are reviewing mine safety after 29 workers died at Massey’s Upper Big Branch Mine in Montcoal, West Virginia, in an April 5 blast, the worst U.S. coal mining explosion in 40 years, according to the National Institute for

Occupational Safety and Health.

10. anonymous complaints reflects a serious disregard for the safety and health of the miners
They are trying to put the fear of God in the miners now. They should arrest the Board of Directors and Blankenship.
