they're a BIG part of this puzzle here; but you also have to blame CA, UT, AZ, CO and Mexico... we all use this water.

However, in LA, water restrictions have been in place for a number of years now, and we have managed (I believe) to keep our usage down even though there are more people here all the time...

It's time for Las Vegas to step up to that plate.

10. Lake Las Vegas

From the time I lived there, 1997-2000, Vegas was full of conspicuous consumption. Lake Las Vegas is a prime example, along with the country club communities that line the streets. It's everywhere. A lot of apartment complexes have waterfalls ranging from small to pretty large and flowing into pools. Walk down the strip, there's water misters everywhere, and don't forget about Bellagio spitting up hundreds of thousands of gallons of water per day just for pure show.

I'm not saying that Vegas is the major part of the problem here, but I am saying that Vegas is just as guilty as the rest of the states. It's not Nevada's water... it comes from Colorado.

I do have to admit, however, that Vegas is good about promoting rock yards in lieu of grass. Grass here in CA is absurd; let alone in the middle of the desert.

3. This is the only good thing about the housing bust--slows down

any plans for new developments, hopefully. Irresponsible to keep building subdivisions willy-nilly, when it's well-known that water resources are already insufficient.

6. You'd be surprised

at how quickly the housing communities are popping up in the Las Vegas valley. I moved away from there in 2000 and every time I go back, I'm blown away at the new development. Just when you thought detached SFR's couldn't get any closer... Sometimes I wonder if they keep building just so all the laborers there can keep a paycheck coming in the door, as construction is HUGE in Vegas.
