Just askin'.
But really, I think I can vouch for the letter's authenticity.
"
Pope Put Off Punishing Abusive Priest" by Laurie Goodstein and Michael Luo. The New York Times: April 10, 2010, A1.
"
The Document Trail: The Rev. Stephen Kiesle" on the NYTimes.com site. These letters look pretty authentic to me.
The Vatican didn't rush to call that letter a forgery - but rather, according to the BBC article "
Pope Benedict hit by new Church child abuse allegations", defended the Pope as "exercising due caution before sacking the priest".
Anyway my point of this thread was a parody of the forged documents scandal that ended Dan Rather's career with CBS News on a rather sour note. Although Rather's message that George W. Bush was AWOL from the Texas Air National Guard was pretty honest, the evidence was flimsy. During the media uproar at that time, the media usually focused on embarrassing Dan Rather and his fellow CBS producers while ignoring the overwhelming other evidence that Bush ditched his National Guard duties.
Enjoy your weekend, everyone!
