24. That A has history
1965: When the U.S. Supreme Court legalized CONTRACEPTION by concluding that we had a right to privacy in Griswold v. Connecticut. That decision paved the way for Roe v. Wade.

31. Just checked -- yup, he did -
"Davis is expected to quickly sign the Reproductive Privacy Act, which was passed by the State Assembly on August 20th. According to the California Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, "SB 1301 will ensure that California women have a constitutionally sound reproductive rights law that protects privacy and the right to choose, regardless of what happens on the federal level."

But: 41 percent of California counties have no abortion provider.

And that's just wrong.

I didn't check, but I'll bet those counties are in the red areas of the state.

22. To be fair, a lot of California counties have almost no people.
In rural counties you have to travel to get most any specialized care because there isn't enough of a population to support it.

We've had Republican legislature for a long time before 2006 when we finally yanked it out underneath.

Hopefully next year after the elections we'll be able to remove some of the anti-choice crap that's in the lawbooks.

26. However, 67% of our counties have no abortion provider
Edited on Fri Apr-16-10 09:18 PM by uppityperson
Still, pretty good here. Edited to add, looking at where I came from (ND), that got an F with 1 provider and lots of crap, very good here.

Spousal consent, both parents must consent if under 18 (in writing), no child abuse or rape waiver. So your incestous dad must give consent in writing. Even if your life is threatened.
AND "A woman may not obtain an abortion until at least 24 hours after the attending physician, referring physician, or physician's agent tells her: (1) the medical risks associated with the proposed abortion procedure including, when medically accurate, infection, hemorrhage, danger to subsequent pregnancies, and infertility; (2) the medical risks associated with continuing the pregnancy to term; (3) the probable gestational age of the "unborn child"; (4) the name of the physician who will provide the abortion; and (5) the abortion will end "the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being;".

In addition, at least 24 hours prior to an abortion, the physician or physician's agent must inform her: (1) that medical assistance benefits may be available for prenatal care, childbirth, and neonatal care; (2) that the "father" is liable for child support, even if he offered to pay for the abortion; and (3) that she has a right to review state-prepared materials that describe the "unborn child" and list agencies that offer alternatives to abortion. The physician or physician's agent must orally inform the woman about the materials. "

27. I'm in Washington, too, and it was on the ballot the very first time I voted. On
the same ballot, we voted to make it illegal to discriminate against people because of their sexual preferences (I forget how that was worded). I took it for granted that we Washingtonians would do the right thing, and we did. :hi:

37. I'm a native -- and I'm 57, so I've been here a long time and I've seen it get
more conservative. I recently lived 7 years in North Carolina and when I came back I was looking at a house for sale and the real estate agent said something like 'it's a great place for a man and a woman, or a man and a man, or whatever, to make a home." I NEVER would have heard that in NC, so I appreciated Seattle all the more! In NC I was surprised in my small town when I'd see an Obama bumper sticker (I think I saw three), and here I'm surprised when see a McCain bumper sticker.

But yeah, even though it's not as liberal as it once was, we've still got it REALLY REALLY good! :pals:
