I don't believe the Rethugs will make any moves to work with the Dems until after the elections. Even then they probably still won't. Both sides have doubled down on their positions in hopes of swaying the voters in 2010.
The Rethugs hope that they can highlight the negatives of HCR and other issues so loudly that voters will hesitate if they were thinking of voting another way. They want to scare people and fear is a potent factor.
The Dems want to highlight the obstruction of the Rethugs and its direct harm in areas of unemployment and flood insurance. They also hope the economy continues improvement enough to give people hope even if they haven't been directly affected yet by the upswing. Financial reform is also a positive step if it can be summed up without a brazillion financial terms. Hope is also a potent factor.
I would immediately put together a huge jobs bill. I would force the Rethugs to vote against it again in this economy and highlight their opposition. Emphasize the fact that people going back to work will help in all areas and help offset deficits if the budget vultures arrive to pick it to death. Highlight programs that will drop in spending as people go back to work.
I personally have no idea what the results of the 2010 election will be. I don't think the Rethugs can retake the House or Senate. There are too many moving parts now, and there is always the possibility of coming events that could shake up things even more.
I do believe the big hinge will be the economy. That is the gut issue that people will probably vote on when they mark their ballots. HCR and other factors will play a part, but I think how people feel about the nation's recovery is key.
IMHO a lot of people will not really have a solid opinion on which way to vote until they enter the voting booth.
1. I'm certain the rethugs will gain seats but I hope
that they won't actually get a majority in the Senate or House. And I hope that in 2012 we will have shown that the direction our party is taking the country in is better, and maybe then we will be in a good position for that election.
I think the next 10-15 years will be the most dangerous ones for our country. After that, the generation that is currently addicted to Faux News will have largely died off and I truly believe the balance between progressive and regressive will swing more in our favor.
Always such a pleasure to read your posts, glad you are here! :)
