Girl Attacked as Students and Parents Cheer, Take Video

OAKDALE, Calif. (CBS/KOVR) Crowds of students and parents gathered around to watch an Oakdale High School freshman violently beat her classmate. Instead of calling 911, students whipped out their cell phones to record the attack.

Manita Hazlewood, the mother of the victim, told CBS affiliate KOVR that her daughter didn't have a chance to fight back. "This girl was on top of her slamming her head into the ground," she said.

The flight lasted about 30 seconds but the girl was already badly beaten and suffered a concussion. A mother, who wants to remain anonymous, says she stepped in to help as she witnessed parents cheering on the attacker.

"I was very shocked. These are grown parents. This girl had enough time, and these people were right next to it," said the woman.

The victim's mother told KOVR, "She's traumatized. Not only was she beaten, it was on YouTube; there's video. I got three different versions of it."

5. They should. It means you're psychologically healthy. While we can't...
...change how sick the world is, we can at least take some solace in the fact that we reject that shit.

I know it's an odd point to polish but it's one of the little stones of wisdom I turn over in my pocket as I shuffle through this bizarre world.

3. A friend who is a principal told me
a few months ago two 3rd grade girls got into a fight at school. Both were suspended. After school, one of the girls was picked up by her mother who followed the bus the other girl was on and when she got off, the mother told her daughter to get out of the car and beat the shit out of the other girl. And she did while her mother told her to keep hitting her harder.

The bus driver called the cops.

12. Isn't Kansas voting or has voted on allowing college students to carry concealed
weapons on campus (or was that MO), something like that... I can't recall all of the details now, but I was shocked to think the college environment might be coming to that... All of this nonsense in schools is insane... and IMO it points right to the parents.

41. I don't know
My friend was there too. The cops came and were still trying to settle it when she left. She went to talk to the bus driver and make sure the rest of the kids on the bus got home safely. I never found out if anyone was arrested. She did say that several neighbors also called 911 when they saw this 8 year old girl beating up another girl while her mom cheered her on.

6. What is this society coming to?
As a former classroom teacher, let me tell you, the excuses and behavior that was deemed acceptable by parents that I heard on a continual basis would make your eyes roll back in your head.

I am now an Independent Study Teacher and work with kids who are enrolled in a public school, but do not learn in a traditional classroom setting. Many of my students were harassed and bullied in school. Or, they witnessed it and were traumatized by what they saw.

It just breaks my heart.

20. Sadly, I think we have many of them. When I watch the teabaggers bully, for example,
I am constantly remained of how low our society has become. I have no idea where it is headed, but I am concerned about the future, especially if this place were to take a hard RW turn with republican majorities embracing the teabagger mentality.

There is nothing in this country that makes it immune from the violence and hatred we have seen throughout history in other countries, and this country when mob mentality starts to rule.

38. Yes, quite true. And the Salem witch trials, lots of things come to mind. I guess
what really gets to me today is the over abundance of hate-media and its popularity. I think it feeds the fires of hatred, etc. It is in many ways historically quite a violent country, now some in the media stoke it for obscene profits.

48. And I think it discourages empathy.
If someone's free to make as many attacks as he/she wants, and without consequence, then you get cyberbullies, flamers, and worse. And there's distance as well, and the ability to dehumanize the object of those attacks.

People watching the video don't know what really happened, she said. She also complained about how unfair it was that this video is being watched all over the country, and that people are trying to make her look bad.

Girl needs a serious reality check, it sounds like.

Blame the victim. Pick on the weak. I just can't help but tie this to an increasingly conservative country.

When I was growing up in the Seattle Public School system, there was Zero tolerance for bullying, and most of the children would actually defend each other if someone was bullied.

37. We have 2nd generation gangs here.
When the kid gets in a fight, the parents rally their siblings and come circle the school parking lot looking for the kid. We have to call the police all the time to shoo them away. Then we have to warn the kid and THEIR parents call THEIR siblings and go looking for the other group.

It's just . . . I dunno what to even say.

43. We had an incident in one of our schools
Two girls got into a fight. Teacher broke it up and sent them to the office. Principal sent them back to class. One of the girls pulled out her cell phone and called her family. 20 minutes later, they came up to school, walked into the classroom and proceeded to beat the shit out of the other girl. Two grown men. The rest of the family stood there and cheered them on. Teacher called 911 and later took a stress leave.

I can't even imagine grown men walking into my classroom and beating up a little girl.

Also the principal was fired a few weeks later for several things, this fight being one of them. (Why the FUCK would you ever send kids back to class after a fight??)

KOVR says the victim was suspended even though the video allegedly shows her to be the recipient of the attack. The other girl has reportedly been expelled.

Police are investigating. No word yet on what the fight caused the fight.
I hate that the only way schools now know how to deal with attacks is to blame both the attacker and the victim. They suspended the victim.
