Oh boy. 'Preacher Compares Attacks on Pope to Anti - Semitism'
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Attacks on Pope Benedict and the Catholic Church over a sexual abuse scandal are comparable to the most shameful anti-Semitism, a preacher told a Vatican Good Friday service attended by the pontiff.

Father Raniero Cantalamessa drew the parallel during a "Passion of the Lord" service in St Peter's Basilica on the day Christians commemorate Jesus' death by crucifixion....

....Cantalamessa, noting that this year the Jewish Passover and Christian Easter fell during the same week, said Jews throughout history had been the victims of "collective violence" and drew a comparison with current attacks on the Church over the scandal.

He read the congregation a part of a letter he received from a Jewish friend, who said he was "following with disgust the violent and concentric attacks against the Church, the pope..."

3. He wasn't a Nazi. There are plenty of legitimate things to criticize him for.
That is not one of them.

4. I actually grew up in a very anti-Catholic town
we were among the few Catholics there. It was an okay town otherwise, but swarming with Baptists. This Pope is terrible - don't think for a minute I support him - but there really is some anti-Catholic bias out there.

8. It's ironically usually a one sided hatred.
Most Catholics are oblivious that Baptists and Evangelicals despise them.

I find Catholic Republicans who called George Bush a 'Christian' beyond hilarious...because if he every actually beleived what his faith told him (which I don't think he ever did) he would never return the term.

10. Catholic Democrats and Catholic Republicans
might as well be two different religions. I can't bear this latest crop of right-wing Catholics.

14. They usually are single issue voters. You know the issue.
To say it's name would be redundant.

None-the-less I'm seen them reason that they have to capture all the other "values" of the Republican religious Right...which for all the anti-Catholic rhetoric I hear at DU...really doesn't capture what values (protecting pedos aside) the Church promotes.

15. Catholic REPUBLICANS are single issue
Not Catholic Dems. Though, I will say, I was amazed when the otherwise vile Pete Coors was running for Senator, he publicly stated he did not support the death penalty.

13. You'd think the big crucifix on the wall behind the altar would be a dead givaway.

I suppose they were expecting pictures of the Pope...never seen one in any Catholic Church. He's not even brought up on a common basis at mass.

16. And they are all "controlled by foreigners"....I agree, but I think the
church's position on this is hateful and they are taking no responsibility for any wrongdoing....
Yeah, I can bash them - I used to be one myself.
