A terrible what if: What if the repubs countered with single payer?
I have heard ill informed righties argue that elements of single payer, and strong public option would be superior. Sure they didnt REALLY know what they were saying. Still, is it remotely possible, that the replace portion of the repub repeal and replace, is strong? What would happen if they did?

13. Already I have seen some dedicated RWers on another forum
come right out and say they want single payer rather than mandated private insurance. I think when they see that the ins cos are NOT their friends in spite of the new law, they will come around to the idea of SP in large numbers. We need to be ready to give it to them.

I think Obama set it up this way. The ins cos are incapable of behaving like civilized human beings and will continue to cheat and hurt people. And it will be their doom.

first they don't have the votes for repeal, at last not in this reality, and even assuming they win every election in the Senate. They will have 51 votes. they need 67 votes...

23. Just a little question . . .
not that I think the concept is realistic in any way.

Assuming, however, that the planet tilted on its axis and they did propose this, are you suggesting that the Dems wouldn't vote for it?

Partisan politics over the good of the nation?

28. I did not go there
because realistically that is not going to happen. At least not in this reality.

Now if for some reason they proposed single payer... as long as it is based on something like medicare or Tricare... I'd be begging my reps to vote for it.

But it ain't gonna happen in this reality UNDER THIS GOP. Now something that MIGHT happen, is that the GOP goes the way of the WHIG party and the Conservative party that forms to replace it do that. See GOP in oh 1858 and Slavery. Alas given current reality this is not as far fetched as some 'round these parts believe it is.

24. The Republicans really do not believe it is a government role to
provide any form of HC. The only reason they pretend along
is they would cease to exist as a party if they do not do
something.

It must be free-market based, Our plan is basically a Republican
Plan.

They will propose some voucher system and you will be on your
own to haggle with the Insurance companies.

Single Payer would be socialism in their warped thinking.

40. People on DU would fall all over themselves opposing Single Payer. Many upscale Dems already do.
Edited on Sun Mar-28-10 11:23 PM by Leopolds Ghost
They already have health insurance and are primarily concerned with deadbeats (working poor who can afford premiums, aka the undeserving poor) increasing the cost of their premiums by making socialized ER visits (everyone knows socialized ER care is the reason costs are so high, right?) and making insurance too expensive for the "deserving" poor that need it. They figure "there should be a law", and there is. Insurance still too high for the "deserving poor"? That is the insurance industry's fault, since they are now required to sell insurance to the deserving poor, and the poor are required to buy it. why should government bail them out by assuming the costs of a failing health care system? "Everyone knows" means-tested programs like welfare and public housing only hurt the poor! "Only the Republicans and nutcase populists want single payer", they'd mutter. "Fucking crazies, just as bad as Ron Paul."

60. The Republican single payer replacement program
Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 02:04 AM by Zambero
First, look in the mirror. What you're seeing is a single payer -- that's YOU my friend! Now, single payer, go ahead and single-handedly PAY your premiums, copays, and out-of-pocket expenses for denied or excluded coverage. Not to worry, the gov't is completely off your back here. It's really swell to have your "Liberty" back, isn't it?

61. All but about ten Dems would vote FOR IT. Sounds good. Let's go.
However, Repubs would do so in order to destroy it. De-fund it, despite it being half the cost we currently pay. They'd spend extra money on keeping foreigners from using it and probably on half a dozen other ridiculous denials until it cost a fortune and would start to cost more than what we have now, then claim it was faulty from the start, let's go back to large insurance company profits while Americans die of no insurance.

But, we'd fight as Dems to have a good single-payer should Repubs decide to allow it. Still, ten Dems would try to undermine it. We could handle that with the Repubs on board.

Those dang flying pigs might spread disease.
