2. Those people think that the $3,000 or so that they contributed through taxes
completely covers their SSI/medicare expenses. They don't understand that the small amount they contributed through taxes is used up in the first 6 months to a year in most cases.

15. SSI isn't social security. those people contributed more than $3000,
and the "used up in the first 6 mo-yr" = canard.

not to defend the woman, she's either ignorant or hypocritical, but you're repeating right-wing spin.

7. Family memeber said...
she said she is against universal health care and yet is ok with her SSI and Medicare she gets. She participates in universal health care, but at the same time says she is against it...I think she is rather confused.

13. You're right, she's obviously confused. Ask her what she thinks it is.
Then you can correct her. And encourage her to look it up, and start thinking for herself.

4. Tell me about it
My brother's wife's sister is one of those. She draws 100% disability from the government , medicaid, food stamps...every bit of assistance she can get. She sits and listens to Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh ad nauseum, drinks and rails against "big government and liberals"

I went a while back to fix a broken window for her on the trailer she lives in. I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure she broke it throwing something in one of her fits she throws while those programs are on.

Anyway, while I was fixing the window, she had Hannnity on and she started going off about how awful the liberals were and how they were ruining the country blah blah blah and I just stopped. I turned to her and told her " I'm one of the goddamned *awful liberals* of which you speak. I am one of the ones who stands up and constantly defends YOUR ability to collect all the aid you collect, which by the way, was fought for and won by LIBERALS. If it were up to your conservative heroes and the republican party alone, you wouldn't collect a damned dime, you could work or die no matter how sick or disabled you are as far as they're concerned. You are nothing but *human waste* to the people you worship. Don't you get it???!!"

She just glared at me like I had shot her dog. I threw my tools in my tool box and as I was headed out the door she asked "aren't you going to fix my window?" I told her she could fix her own goddamned window and left. I can't count the times I have gone over there and helped her out around the place because that's the way I am, I have always gone out of my way to help people in need...but this time I just had all I could stand. Maybe that makes me a bad liberal, but so be it. One can only bite the hand that feeds them so many times before the hand doesn't reach out to them anymore.

:grr:

6. well, I kinda felt bad about it later
If I had stayed and fixed the window, it might have helped to show what we are really all about, that we have stood up to help everybody for so many years despite being shit on over and over.

14. Well, ya see, that's because you have a conscience.
You felt bad and probably still do to some degree, not just to prove a point but because you were there to help her. That's perfectly understandable.

However, what isn't understandable to a of people is how your brother's wife's sister can't see the disconnect in how the very same programs she rails against are in fact, her lifeline. She depends on them to get by. What would happen if the people she worships were in power and pulled the plug on those very programs? You should have told her to have Hannity, Beck, or Limbaugh fix her window but of course, if she ever called any of them, they would just use it at a launching point to demonstrate how those "socalist" programs don't work.

Talk about damned if you do and damned if you don't.

11. This is a fairly common way of thinking
Many people don't want GIVEN to others what they believe themselves to have EARNED.

It's probably the biggest obstacle to the extension of Medicare to the general
population.
