Maybe Some Education On The Sensitivities Of Transgendered Folks Are In Order
Edited on Fri Feb-19-10 01:57 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
And it has nothing to do with Keith Olbermann.

Don't refer to transgendered females as he and transgendered males as she and everything will be fine.

I would think this observation should be fairly unremarkable on a board for progressives.

1. Great. Maybe you should post this where Keith Olbermann might read it.
Otherwise, uh, what?

2. And as the partner of a transguy, please don't call him "IT"...
As one transwomen put it: "Being trans isn't like 'being a woman trapped in a man's body'; it's like being a human trapped in a gorilla suit. You want to jump up and down and yell: 'No wait! I'm not a gorilla! Look, I'm a human being! I'm a person! Don't run away!"

Given the state of utter financial poverty that most transpeople are subjected to, the always-looming violence, it'd be nice if people could do us all a solid and stop with the "Man Coulter" jokes--or any other kind of "trans people are ugly and scary" jokes. Just think before you talk. There are a lot of things to joke about in this world, pick a new topic, thanx.

8. Unfortunately, all too many "progressives"........
only regard their own pet issues as legitimate.

They'd prefer that everyone else sit down and shut up.

12. AP Styles?
Question: Do You Call A Transgender Person He or She?
Answer: It is appropriate to ask a transgender person which pronoun he or she prefers to use, whether or not they take hormones or have had surgery.

In 2006, the AP Stylebook, the most widely used by journalists and editors, was updated to include usage standards for terms related to transgender people. The AP Stylebook encourages writers to "use the pronoun preferred by the individuals who have acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite sex or present themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth."

"If that preference is not expressed," the Stylebook continues, "Use the pronoun consistent with the way the individuals live publicly.
