Pagan worship at Air Force Academy by Bob Barr
I think he's off his meds.

But I have to tell you, if I were in the Air Force and was being commanded by an officer who practices hedonism as a religion (another part of the definition of “pagan”), and who dances around a circle of stones in the woods carrying a lighted candle, I would be more than a little worried about following him into battle.

2. Yeah -- exactly.
It makes soooo much sense to follow someone who believes that there was one magical dude in the history of the planet and he was born of a virgin who was raped by the all-powerful sky god and then he died but he came back to life but he's dead but he's going to come back and save us from our sins any day now if we just belieeeeeve!

3. Amazing - a thread that manages to be insulting to both Pagans and Christians!

That's what I love about DU, how we all respect each other's belief systems!

4. I can see how it would be hard to relate
But it is really no different. Both religions are just a set of beliefs and rituals, Christianity more familiar to most American military, I venture.

5. "Hedonism" = "Paganism"? Swede: Please use quotation marks for quotes...
I thought this was *your* opinion until I clicked on the link and saw it was a quote from Barr, who evidently is an ignoramus. I don't know what dictionary he is getting his definition from, but he obviously hasn't bothered to educate himself about religions other than his own -- nor have a bunch of the responders to his blog.

13. It's been my experience that most Christianists don't know much about their *own* religion..
For instance most of them don't know that the Gospels weren't written until at least forty or fifty years after the Christ.

How accurate would our knowledge of WWII be if no one wrote anything down about it until 1990?

7. I just LOVE the AJC and all those people who told Bob off!
Wonderful stuff. I wish I still lived in Atlanta fairly often. The Orlando Sentinel is filled with haters posting nasty comments most of the time. The only real liberal paper in Florida is the St. Pete Times.

11. Then he is a fool
and he has very little knowledge of history. Many of the most fearsome warriors and leaders in history were indeed pagans. And besides, we don't have that pesky little "turn the other cheek clause.

15. I'd be much more worried about following uber-evangelical end-timers into battle.
I mean, are they really concerned about staying alive?

16. LOL. Excellent point. I've yet to meet a fanatical Neo-Pagan who *really* believes the Valkyries...
... will be coming for him on the battlefield, unlike the Rapturists trying to bring about the End of Days right this minute.

On the other hand vets, reservists, and active duty personnel seem to be well-represented among the sects in this super-minority branch of religion.

17. Meh, a deranged old, white male who is fading into complete obsolesence.
He knows nothing about paganism. Paganism is not hedonism. As a former wiccan (now agnostic/pantheist), most of my friends who were into it were not hedonist. They were pretty strict, not in a fundie way but differently.
