Director who plays 'Silent Bob' ejected from flight because of size
Edited on Sun Feb-14-10 04:26 PM by undeterred
Director Kevin Smith was ejected from plane after being deemed "too fat to fly," he says on his Twitter account.

After delivering a speech in San Francisco, he boarded a Southwest Airlines flight to Burbank and was seated on the plane but then was thrown off the flight Saturday evening. The director of Clerks and other movies, who is also known for playing the movie character Silent Bob in many films, fired off a round of Twitter messages aimed at Southwest. Among them, "Fair warning folks: If you look like me, you may be ejected from Southwest Air." A spokesperson for Southwest Airlines wrote an apology on the company's Twitter account. The message, from an unnamed representative, says "Hey Kevin! I'm so sorry for your experience tonight! Hopefully we can make things right." -- Lorena Blas

edited to add:

"I'm way fat, but I'm not there just yet," Smith wrote on his Twitter.com account after the incident, adding that he was able to lower both arm rests at his seat. "I broke no regulation."

Southwest Airlines measures whether a customers too large to fly based on the passenger's ability to lower both armrests while sitting on the plane. If the passenger cannot lower one or both armrests, the carrier typically requires the passenger to purchase an additional seat or make arrangements on other flights that may accommodate for extra space.

Maybe they need to start making the seats a little bigger and more comfortable for everyone.

9. That was a fitting video.
Smith will most likely put this into his next to next film (the next one is finishing up now). I imagine it will have some body function jokes added in for good measure.

10. You think his next film will feature a fictional airline named "Southworst"...?
Maybe the guys from Clerks can wind up working as their repair technicians. ;-)

5. I know a couple who is going on a very long flight
to visit their son in the military. The wife is maybe 250 lbs... they are buying two expensive airline tickets for her instead of one. Regular seats are ok for her for a 3 hour flight but not when you're going overseas. Her choice, not the airlines.

3. Not famous en ought to avoid the discrimination, but famous enough to embarrass SW Air.

..and make their PR department go into crisis mode.

I'm right at that line for weight.size thing for airlines. I wear black to look slimmer.

8. Airlines have done this to themselves
I am 5'2 and about 143 and the seats don't leave me much room. So an average man or slightly above average man is going to be like a sardine. The airlines have to make the seats a little bit larger. They have no incentive to do so right now so more of the same ol shit on a different day.....

11. Just because they fit between the armrests does not mean that they fit.
I once sat next to a guy who fit between the armrests but his fat slopped over to the side, which was very uncomfortable and irritating to me.
