Man with Ax Kills Baby, Injures 2 in Vegas
(CBS/ AP) Las Vegas police say an ax attack that killed a 4-month-old boy in a stroller and left his mother critically injured appeared to be a random act.

Police say they don't think 33-year-old Harold E. Montagu knew the woman and the child attacked just before noon Thursday on a residential street several blocks east of the Stratosphere hotel-casino.

Police say the woman was hospitalized in critical condition after Montague ran out of a house and hit her and the boy with a hatchet or small ax.

*snip*

"It was a look of pure evil," Teresa told the station. "I just saw a man beating a woman. I thought he was beating her with a golf club. I came out and told him to stop. I was calling 911, and I realized it was a hatchet… He started hacking on her again. I said, 'Stop that right now.' He ran in the house."

For a wood-burning fireplace.

Still...urbanization has got to be making inroads on the necessity for axes.

Chain saw is faster for big jobs, but cumbersome on camp-outs.

48. Beats me. Growing trees takes
such an investment in scarce water and attention, nobody's going to cut them down for firewood. Plus there's an ordinance here that forbids wood fires; if you want a "working" fireplace, it has to be gas-fired.

59. It can get chilly there from time to time
and snow isn't completely out of the question. The high today is in the 60s, and for people who are used to the 100s, that's fireplace weather.

41. Yes--at both my city house and my beach house.
At the city house, it was used by neighbors to hack down the door of a burning building, and to remove a fallen tree from the road.

Tree removal at the beach house.

Useful thing to have. That, and a crowbar.

54. Well, it IS a wild guess
Just going by the weapon and the fact that several fans of ICP and associated acts have been motivated to kill, often citing said bands as an inspiration, which is quite the rarity.

Probability is on your side, however, he's probably just some random maniac.

51. how could the mother even bear that memory? I'm sure Good Morning America
and the Today show producers are in her face right now so we can all hear the gruesome details, etc., until Matt inevitably says "And on a much lighter note..." and segues seamlessly into a banal sports story.

Then they'll sigh and ask "What would make that man do such a thing?" When we already know the answer is untreated mental illness, for fucks sake.

especially like that, in front of my very eyes. So tragic and senseless. The man must be very ill because I can't think of any other logical reason for doing something like that. Not that there is a logical reason of course, but that one seems to make the most sense.

44. This is what happens when the mental institutes are closed...
When a crazy person is pushed too far they go bonkers and this stuff happens.
Its been this way ever since ol Ronald Reagan put the mentally ill out on the streets.
We used to have a system to help catch the worst of the crazies and get them some help or at least put them where they couldn't hurt others or themselves.
Now we just let them run amok and cry that there isn't any money to help them because we are too busy using that money to murder brown skinned people that live over oil or minerals we want.
If we closed those 700 bases we have already built or are building in Afganistan..we could stop more of this kind of tragedy happening.
