Republicans say they'll work with Obama on GOP ideas
Republican leaders said today they can work with President Obama on a variety of items he supports -- all of which happen to be long-standing Republican proposals as well.

A revival of nuclear power; more off-shore drilling for oil and gas; development of "clean coal" technology; and passage of long-standing free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea .

These proposals also have varying amounts of opposition among congressional Democrats -- though, as McConnell pointed out, Obama endorsed each one in his recent State of the Union speech.

right they will "work with Obama" to get their ideas passed, but screw everything/body else. I don't believe they will work with him at all.

1. Repuke 'ideas' are retreads of things that have already failed.
And failed big time. All of those 'ideas' are losers that will only dig us further into the hole, financially and environmentally.

I hate repukes.

7. i'll go down that agenda 1 by 1
nuclear power: not worth the long term risks
off shore drilling: if there was any significant reserves off shore it'd be drilled already
clean coal: a scam
free trade: we have too much free trade already

their agenda is fucking re... gressive.

8. The federal minerals management service disagrees with you
The offshore has accounted for about one-quarter of total U.S. natural gas production over the past two decades and almost 30 percent of total U.S. oil production in recent years (Table 2). Although production has declined slightly in the past few years, the Mineral Management Service (MMS) reported that natural gas production in Federal offshore waters was 4.042 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) in 2004. This was about 21 percent of the total natural gas produced in the United States that year. MMS reported that Federal offshore oil production also slightly declined in recent years with 565 million barrels produced in 2004, which is 29 percent of the total oil produced in the United States that year. Furthermore, in 2003, MMS estimated that there was 406.1 Tcf of remaining undiscovered technically recoverable natural gas and 76 billion barrels of oil in U.S. offshore regions. These estimates represent the potential hydrocarbons of an area that can be produced using current technology, without any consideration to economic feasibility. Of these amounts, an estimated 232.5 Tcf of natural gas and 36.9 billion barrels of oil are located in the Gulf of Mexico.

9. oh. well then, let's drill and drill and drill
us consumes 19.6 million barrels/day. 7.154 billion barrels/year. so the estimate is that there's 10 years worth of oil offshore, max? never mind that burning it is killing the atmosphere.

From http://www.theoildrum.com/tag/overview :

There is a huge amount of oil which theoretically can be extracted, but the question is whether the cost will be cheap enough for us to be able to afford to extract it. If the oil is too expensive to extract, the shortage of oil seems to cause a recession, similar to what we are having now. I discuss this in purely monetary terms, but it is also an issue with respect to low energy return on investment (EROI), for those of you used to thinking in EROI terms.

In many ways, the folks who say we a have lots of oil are correct. All one has to do is include the oil which is extremely expensive and slow to extract. Much of the cheap, easy-to-extract oil has already been removed.

10. If obama can trade it for healthcare, it's a win-win
Increased offshore work means lots of jobs for the heavily unionized american merchant marine. It'll also have a trickle-down effect, boosting american industries that manufacture the specialized equipment for the rigs.
