CIA Interrogation Tapes DESTROYED!!!

The New York Times

Feb 2, 2010

CIA Interrogation Tapes

The Justice Department has begun a criminal investigation into the C.I.A.’s destruction of videotapes in 2005 documenting the interrogation of two Qaeda operatives in the agency’s custody.

The New York Times disclosed the destruction of the videotapes in an article in December 2007 by Mark Mazzetti, who wrote that the agency acted in the midst of Congressional and legal scrutiny about its secret detention program.

The Times account said the videotapes showed agency operatives in 2002 subjecting terrorism suspects, including Abu Zubaydah, the first detainee in C.I.A. custody, to severe interrogation techniques. The tapes were destroyed in part because officers were concerned that video showing harsh interrogation methods could expose agency officials to legal risks, several officials said.

1. How are we ever going to move forward?
While we are still destroying evidence of past atrocities? The Germans had to buck up and deal with what was done in their names, why the hell can't we? We have built up a Karmic debt(if you believe in that sort of thing) that will never be paid off until we come clean, and punish the war criminals.

6. The Germans didn't deal with it - the winners of WWII did
The German people and government have struggled on how best to deal with the Nazi era. But it was the victors of WWII, the British, French, Russians, and Americans who conducted the trials at Nuremberg and elsewhere to find guilt and extract punishment for the war crimes of the Nazis.

Perhaps the lesson to draw is that it will take an international body to hold Bush, Cheney, etc. etc.accountable for declaring war on Iraq, massive killing of civilians, torture of prisoners of war, violation of due process guaranteed by the U. S. Constitution, kidnapping and jailing of citizens of other countries (rendition), and many other crimes against humanity.

If that's what it takes, it's OK with me.

3. Well, that's that!
Glad that's over! :sarcasm:

The tapes were destroyed in part because officers were concerned that video showing harsh interrogation methods could expose agency officials to legal risks...

Never mind exposing agency officials to a "crisis of conscience" or preserving a lifetime of shame. Just avoiding "legal risks."

14. your name "RUMMYisFROSTED" reminds me...
of a very good thing the CIA did a few years ago. Do you remember the press-conference where the "retired" CIA analyst frosted him by proving he was a bald-faced liar, live and on camera?

18. They had just "escorted" an anti-war demonstrator out of a press conference...
An elderly well-dressed gentleman politely raised his hand and they were about to escort him out too. Rummy said "No let him ask his questions." BIG MISTAKE! He tricked Rummy into lying about an earlier statement in the conference. Rummy resigned not long after this conference. It appeared to be the straw that broke the camel's back. It was a while back. Though I saw it all live on TV, I can't remember any more details, except the CIA analyst said, "So you lied earlier?"

10. Sounds similar to the 3000-4000 SEC files that all happened to be
"lost" in the WTC7 "collapse".

The files for approximately three to four thousand cases were destroyed, according to the Los Angeles Times. Among the destroyed documents were ones that may have demonstrated the relationship between Citigroup and the WorldCom bankruptcy.

With the CIA we should expect this type of behavior. It's what they do for a living. Spies will be spies.

25. Distressing to see tinfoil Conspiracy Theorists run amok here
Truly it was most likely an accident.

There are no "sleeper cells" in the CIA or Congress.

Now of course I'm lying through my teeth, but there are plenty of DUers who would seriously post some "CT" "tinfoil" smear like this if you all hadn't already gathered in too large a number.

That's the power of bearing witness to a cabal.

37. "could expose agency officials to legal risks" but OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE could not?
I'm thinking that the tapes showed some high officials, people we would know if the video was seen.

And, worse, that some of it would be seen as unconscionable, even pedophilia.
