Grayson: Pat Robertson and his followers have their own 'pact with the Devil'
January 27, 2010, 12:00 pm by Christina Wilkie

An outspoken Florida Democrat is taking on Pat Robertson and the Christian right.

Robertson indicated the earthquake happened because Haitians had made a pact with the devil in the early 19th century.

Grayson pointed out that two devastating earthquakes hit the island before the so-called pact, and few major earthquakes have hit the island in the 200 years since it gained independence from France.

This, said Grayson, is in contrast to the neighboring Dominican Republic, which has been shaken by numerous quakes in the last few centuries.

"So under Pat Robertson's logic," said Grayson. "Haiti has benefited tremendously by ... a pact with the devil."

Grayson then said he wondered how "Pat Robertson's followers have made out with their own pact with the devil?"

He explained that Robertson and his supporters were unable to convince lawmakers years ago to outlaw abortion rights and ban gay marriage, despite having GOP majorities in the House and Senate, a Republican president, and a right-leaning Supreme Court. The conservative elements in government, said Grayson, have done "nothing to help Pat Robertson's followers accomplish what they wanted."

Grayson added, "So tonight I ask those people, the Christian right: What about your own pact with the devil? How has that worked out for you?"

The controversial Florida lawmaker is not known for mincing his words. In late September, Grayson said on the House floor that "Republicans want you to die quickly" during a speech on healthcare reform.

Republicans are targeting Grayson in the midterm elections.
