If you were a Dem in a solidly blue state and you WANTED to lose, you would....

A. Go on vacation with less than a month to go in the race

B. Spell your own state's name wrong in an advertisement

C. Ask "who's that?" when questioned about one of the more famous Boston athletes

D. Say that taxes need to be raised.

E. Fail to highlight your opponent's policy positions until less than a week to go in the race.

F. Continually act nonchalant about the whole race and show no passion whatsoever.

G. Never bother to actually ask voters for their vote.

I mean... If Martha Coakley's campaign was TRYING to lose the seat, I'm not sure what else they would've done differently than what they did.

I guess she could've gone "hiking on the Appalachian Trail", so to speak. But short of that, she did everything possible that a Dem could do to lose in Massachusetts.

She acted like the election was a mere formality for her to be crowned successor to our Late Great Sen. Kennedy. What was she thinking? Did Sen. Kennedy ever treat the people like they owed him their vote? I don't think so. He never took the people for granted.

...which is the exact opposite of how Ted Kennedy conducted himself in the job. Think about it: if anyone had the right to be above-it-all, it was Teddy -- one of the richest and most powerful men in American, pretty much guaranteed a lifetime seat because of his family name. If anyone could have gotten away with "dialing it in," it was Teddy. But, on the contrary, he was always involved, passionate, and driven.

This may have been billed as a race for "Teddy's seat," but our problem was that, in Martha Coakley, we basically ran the "anti-Teddy." And the contrast between the two probably doomed her more than anything else.

She ran a lousy campaign, true, but seems like a perfectly competent public servant, and the ideological divide between the candidates could not be more stark.

Also, Massachusetts is not only a very blue state, but also has one of the most highly-educated electorates in the country.

It is a very disturbing sign that we could not beat a teabagger THERE, even with a lackluster candidate.

years ago, i was a cop in MA.

we made fun of the state troopers because they also spelled the state's name wrong in their calendar.
