Unions stand with all workers.
I am a delegate to our country labor council so I am knowledgeable on the efforts the unions are taking in the healthcare fight. The organizing and actions we take are in support of all workers. We recognize that most workers are not union, most cannot join a union. But the unions fight for the working class. That's what I see.

So all the posts that say "I got mine, go fuck yourself" are sadly mistaken.

1. Is that why they fought for *only* union-negotiated "Cadillac" plans to be exempt
from the excise tax?

"We stand in solidarity - with our own. Not those dirty non-union folks." :eyes:

5. Union members are the middle-class workers
who will be most impacted by the excise tax. The CEOs who may get Cadillac plans can pay the tax. Better yet, let's fight for higher income taxes and less loop holes for the wealthy. That's the real answer.

8. that isn't what they fought for, it's what they were offered...
to go away and shut up.

Fact is, though, there are actual benefits to belonging to a union. If this "compromise" ends up being what passes (not a sure thing) that will just be another incentive to unionize.

My bet, though, is that this "offer" is smoke and mirrors to divide and conquer working people. And you're helping.

2. My union reps stand for all workers...even ones we're not trying to organize.
I've seen my union president file case with the NLRB on behalf of individual employees of companies that aren't even close to being in our trade. When I asked him about it, he said flat out: "I defend the rights of all workers no matter the vocation, not just our own membership."

3. Frankly, I prefer it if my union looks at its members as firsts among equals.
That's one of the benefits. Otherwise, why fight for it? I'm OK fighting for people who, for whatever reason, can't. It pisses me off, however, when most of the fighting I do is for people who won't fight with me, and complain when they get the benefit of my fight.
