Cornyn urges Reid to ask "W.W.T.D." ("What Would Trent Do")...Lott becomes the world's moral compass
Cornyn, Steele Call on Reid to Resign as Senate Leader After Obama 'Negro' Comment

Sen. John Cornyn, head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Sunday that Reid should follow the example set by Trent Lott in 2002, who resigned his leadership post.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, has joined Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele in calling on Harry Reid to resign his Senate majority leadership role after news broke over the weekend that Reid described then-candidate Barack Obama in 2008 "light-skinned" with "no Negro dialect" unless he wants one.

Cornyn, head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Sunday that Reid should follow the example set by Trent Lott in 2002, who resigned his leadership post after making unfortunate remarks at the centennial birthday party for Sen. Strom Thurmond, who had been a segregationist in the 1940s.

"In 2002, Democrats expressed outrage at Senator Lott and called on him to step down as leader. That same standard should be applied to Senator Reid and his embarrassing and racially insensitive statements; statements, I would add, that Senator Reid still has yet to clarify," Cornyn said in a written statement.

1. This is so lame. Equating Reid with that racist shit, Lott. If Reid hadn't said "I don't work for
him" about Obama, none of this would stick, because Reid was an early Obama supporter.

2. Baloney!
Part of the reason that Lott was forced out, was that the Bush administration wanted Frist. As I remember, He didn't apologize right away. The thing dragged on for weeks.

3. The evidence is against Reid...
Edited on Mon Jan-11-10 11:19 AM by BolivarianHero
He's a member of a religion with a profoundly racist legacy and he described a minority dialect of English condescendingly. If he weren't a Mor(m)on, I'd be more prone to give him the benefit of the doubt...Most Republicans are worse than Reid however, so any grandstanding they do over this is extremely hypocritical.

As for the question posed by Cornyn and Steele, Trent would have proudly participated in a lynch mob with Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms.

4. um ... WWTD? Get the "liberal media" to cover for him?
Ya think Reid could get the "liberal media" to stop attacking him, and support him?

5. What Reid said is HARDLY like saying segregation should have continued which is what Lott said.

7. Lott strongly implied that America would have been better off if a Segregationist became President
Reid told the truth about how racism manifests in America today, and it was a topic of very open debate in the nation when he said it whether or not America was ready for an African American President. The fact that it was a topic at all was an admission of wide spread racism of the sort Reid was commenting on. The fact that Reid believed Obama could win was, in its appropriate context, a positive and optimistic read on the subject.

Reid supported an African American for President, Lott regretted that a segregationist lost for President. How equivalent of them.

9. Reid should indeed resign his leadership position
not because Enron John told him to, but because he sucks at it.

10. Reid kinda sucks- not much of a leader
but this looks like a coordinated effort to get him to step down for a chosen replacement....I wonder who they plan on sticking us with as our new 'leader'....lieberman??

11. It is geared to do multiple things...get him to step down from leadership,
hurt him in his reelection bid, try to damage the base of the DP by targeting the African-American voters, and just generally muddy the messages and stifle coverage of all other issues.
