German Lingerie Ad Lifts the Veil on Muslim Women
What makes an effective lingerie ad? If you guessed a niqab, a type of veil worn by some Muslim women, kudos to you for thinking outside the box like the creators of this spot by German lingerie retailer Liaison Dangereuse.

Be assured, however, that there are also plenty of sexy curves in this ad.

The spot begins with a dark-haired woman stepping out of the shower. With vaguely Middle Eastern music playing, she applies mascara, steps into high heels, slips on black lingerie and garters and spins in front of the mirror, clearly admiring her body and the lingerie she's wearing. Up to this point, it's typical lingerie commercial fare, but then the ad leaps from the mundane to the surprising: the woman quickly flips a niqab over her head. With only her mascara-ed eyes visible, she gazes out of a window. Then the tag line appears: "sexiness is for everyone."

Very sexy ad, actually. Watch it at the link. I'm sure that the Muslim community will feign indignation while being secretly pleased.

9. She's an actress being paid to sell a product.
And what do you think Muslim women wear under their robes? Or do you think they went naked?

8. I object to the treatment by the media of this ad as somehow "progress," "new" or "surprising."

Women are viewed as objects, whether they're naked or totally enrobed. This ad is just a reminder -- as if women forget. Throw in a little objectification of the exotic "other," and you're on familiar ground.

11. I guessed right on your response
Do you also feel that print ads and/or commercials featuring a toned guy in boxers is also a case of objectification? Just wondering.

12. They can be, sure.

Just like an ad showing a woman in bra and panties can do so without being objectifying.

Edited for clarity

SO how is this objectifying women? It is merely an ad for lingerie..it shows a woman in bra and panties.

15. No problem, I'll walk you through it.
Would not objectification be a case of either it is or it isn't?

Yup. This ad is objectifying -- not because she's nearly naked and sexy, but because she's made an object of desire by the camera for the viewer. It's possible to sell bras without doing that. You can argue about the effectiveness of selling bras that way, of course.

I guess I am trying to figure out if, in your view, only women can be objectified.

I thought I answered that clearly. Men of course can and are objectified in advertising and movies, just like women are. It's not nearly as common, though.

My personal belief is that an ad is just an ad. It's not Hustler, or Juggs, or any of the hardcore porn mags. It is an ad for lingerie, no different than an ad for a snowblower or a credit card.

It's an ad that's not different than other ads <i>that objectify women, no matter what they're selling.</i>
