A news story on the radio today made me go "MOTHER ..... FUCKER"
Sparkly and I are on our way to the gym. WTOP Washington NoozRadio is on. A story comes up framed as an indication that the economy is looking up.

Why?

Because the corporate jet bizniss is up.

20% up.

They interview a corporate jet caterer who confirms the increase. But she notes that they're now buying turkey wraps instead of lobster salad.

3. Well, in LA, I was listening to KNX and the doom and gloom guy was saying we're toast,
He was especially concerned with small bank failures and the inability of small businesses (the source of over 60% of new jobs) to get loans. He thought the airlines were going to hell too. :)

6. don't listen to that guy
he's been saying the end is nigh since 1969. His only qualifications are every time the down cycle comes around, he's right there to tell you he predicted it.

Small business credit is loosening, I hope it get looser.

17. An economist on NPR yesterday said there are two kinds of economists:
Those who can't predict what the interest rates will do, and
those who don't yet know they can't predict what the interest rates will do.

After he finished, I decided to live in a hut. :)

24. You have to use a manual can opener though.
You don't want to waste the energy from the generator opening a can of beans! You must save that energy in order to be able to tune in to your trusty economy downer (or upper) guru!

on and play the market! Are you sure you couldn't upgrade to an RV with an electrical hook-up?

26. An RV? I'd have to rent land to put under it, or crash in someone's yard
and I'd have to eat at Denny's with all the old people who drive RV's around in Northern California.

Maybe I can just psychically tune in? Click in space....air type....

This is funny beyond belief, but I have to crash with my dogs. Whether or not I agree with the method, we agree about most things--maybe not the method.

But what a wonderful and funny conversation we've had!

4. It isn't hard around here to see how this would be good news.
Duncan Aviation employs a lot of people around here, servicing and painting private jets. And they have always provided well-paying jobs. They started massive layoffs when the shit hit the fan. So this is good news.

7. I recall hearing or reading some time ago that orders for London Taxis
Were a good economic indicator..

I did a cursory search on teh Google and found this..

http://www.national-taxi-association.co.uk/from%20wayne/dft_foi_035394.pdf

Taxi use does appear to shadow changes in
national economic performance quite closely, partly because some taxi use is discretionary,
partly because in large urban areas a significant amount of use is for business purposes and
therefore reflects economic activity.

13. A friend told me years ago that the number of concrete trucks on the road was the best
indicator of the economy.

No concrete trucks? No building or remodeling going on.

Lots of concrete trucks? Plenty of building and remodeling going on.

Maybe it was insurance executives anticipating the health insurance mandate bill. :)

12. Yo Stinky. Green shoots
all the stuff it takes to run a corporate jet is strictly small business. Catering, small airports , gas concessions, mechanics, crew, limo business, washing services, hangers....

You just can't harbor a grudge against the well off. Many of them were born that way.

18. A poem I wrote during the Ronald Reagan "trickle-down" years:
Today the sparrows have oats to eat.
The reason for that, of course, is
Yesterday, the Emperor's men
Were feeding oats to his horses.

16. I thought WTOP was now the Federal "News" network. Or I am mixing them
up with one of the other stations.

There is an air america station now in DC. 1050, i think. Don't really like the line-up, so I haven't listened to it much.

I thought you were a fan of the Baltimore Enquirer.

:D

:)

WTOP owns (I believe) Federal News Radio, which is now on TOP's old AM frequency, 1500. WTOP News Radio is still the same operation, just now on three different FM freqs.
