Dominoes Pizza must be hurting - air commercial admitting 'you said our sauce tastes like catsup'
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 02:36 PM by Liberal_in_LA
Anyone else see this commercial. Chefs for Dominoes Pizza state that they heard what the public was saying about their pizza, that the sauce tastes like catsup, and they they changed the sauce, adding herbs. Major admission to make in national TV commercials. They must be hurting from loss of business.

Here is the commercial:

Domino's admits its pizza stinks, tries something new
After years of people telling them that their pizza is awful, Domino's is apparently listening and actually doing something about it.

55. Actually they reference that complaint in the ad, using that exact word, "cardboard."
They say and show how now they're going to brush the crust with some garlic buttery goodness. Not that I care for Domino's and the foul right-wing causes Domino's has supported, but that's the commercial. Looks like they're trying to show they've taken the criticism to heart. It was a rather surprising display of crow-eating.

2. No kidding, I had to pick my lower jaw off the floor when I saw that ad
Finally admitting your pizza has sucked for years is amazing. Doing it in a spot you paid for is jaw dropping.

Improving their pizza or their politics is probably beyond them.

They don't want to admit that many people don't eat their crap because of their politics. And I agree, there's nothing they could do to improve the flavor using the supplies and techniques that guarantee the 5 min, $3 pizza. It would require hiring semi-skilled workers and using better materials, that would cost too much.

It's one long-term boycott I'm proud of.

7. Domino's has always had weak and sugary sauce... for kids
Children's tastes determine a lot of fast food. If you don't want to cook you are looking to feed the kids and their preferences rule... you don't want to fight with them.

To me, Domino's has so much sugar in the sauce it tastes like a weird pastry. And not spicy at all. (Kids don't like spices as much as adults)

So if they change it will be for the better. IMO.

One reason (among many) I tend to buy so many Newman's Own products. Ole Paul never put that nasty stuff in any of his sauces, salad dressings or other products.

I haven't eaten a Domino's pizza in over 20 years, and it's not because they taste like crap (there actually was worse in this town at the time) but because of the right wing ownership and their support of fringe lunatic causes.

22. They're franchised.
While a percentage of their sales go to the corporate office, in most cases, you're dealing with small local business owners.

Now... I *HATE* Dominos and have MAJOR issues with my local franchise (they tried to carbon copy my credit card the last time I ordered from them and the driver refused to give it back when I told him to stop - leading to a REAL issue that almost ended up with the cops here), but people on DU don't understand the concept of franchising for the most part.

31. Not all of them are franchised.
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 03:02 PM by Kalyke
Some are corporately owned. But, of those that are franchised, more than a small percentage of their sales go to corporate. The store owners have to pay a name-usage fee, marketing fees and fees to the food wholesalers. The cost isn't just in franchising.

My ex was a manager there. I know too much about the a-holes. Blahh.

36. And I know a great deal about franchising.
I didn't say a *small* percentage (that depends on many factors), I said a percentage.

In any case, many times when DU demands boycotts on franchised businesses, they encourage hurting local business owners in the process because they don't understand how franchises work. In the case of my locally-owned Dominos, I hope they shrivel up and blow the fuck away.

As a restaurant worker, I know how those corporate places treat employees. Had a taste of it myself. They can all just go away. Who cares if the owner is Domino's or some guy who thinks he'll be rich if he runs his restaurant like a domino's and has company policy to back him up? The parent company giving money to right-wing causes is just the poisoned cherry on the shit sundae.

As soon as I saw it I went down stairs and told my husband about it. Very strange commercial. It probably will get publicity and well get people talking about it but don't know if it will get people to try the pizza. I'm not going to try it just because I saw the commercial. I hate commercials and have spent months teaching my 11 yr old autistic son that we don't buy something just because a commerical tells us to.

37. I've had the new version. If it's possible, it's actually worse.
Yes, their old sauce was crap. Adding spices to crap just makes it taste like spicy crap. I actually didn't think their crust was bad, at least our local joint wasn't. It was one of the few things about their pizza I thought was okay. Now it's flatter and much greasier. It's like they tried to make it more like Pizza Huts. I wouldn't go out of my way for Dominoes before but I tolerated it if I had to. Now there's no way. It's gross.
