New conditions for cannabis considered (NM)
New conditions for cannabis considered

SANTA FE (AP) - A medical advisory board will hold a public hearing Friday in Santa Fe to consider petitions for adding new health conditions to the New Mexico Department of Health's medical marijuana program.

The board will review five petitions and make recommendations to the department secretary, who will then make a final decision.

If a condition is approved, anyone with that medical condition can apply to the program.

The conditions under consideration are Hepatitis C undergoing non-antiviral treatment; cluster headaches; bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder; Ankylosing Spondylitis, a chronic, inflammatory arthritis and auto-immune disease; and Blepharospasm, a neurological movement disorder that causes a twitch of the eyelid.

on occasion. Makes you want to take a boxcutter and go lidless......

Yeah, pot might help that...

7. No, for you, box-cutters might be just the thing.
Just don't pass 'em around.

5. What New Mexico needs ...
... is staff to run their medical cannabis program who know something about cannabis ... and about what hard work looks like. It took them 15 months after their legislated deadline to promulgate regulations for their program, and the regulations they released are almost totally unworkable.

For example, their licensed producers are limited to 95 plants -- total -- to serve each producer's assigned 100+ patients. The first provider ran out of cannabis one week after harvest, leaving patients to get by on one overpriced ounce of cannabis until the next harvest (three months later) OR to turn back to the illicit marketplace for their medicine.

That is why over 99% of the persons eligible for medical marijuana in New Mexico (and, yes, the advisory board that approves eligible conditions there are all physicians) have not even bothered to apply for the program. That is why New Mexico has about 800 patients on their program, while Colorado to their north has over 12,000.

There's lots of problems with New Mexico's program that would be cured if they hired people with the intelligence, the experience, the compassion and the work ethic to get 'er done. I believe New Mexico is the best place in this country to grow high-quality, low cost, organic medical cannabis -- if they ever get serious about doing that. I hate to think we'll have to wait on a new Governor out there to make this program workable but it is looking more like that evey day in the Land of (Dis)Enchantment.
