Prop 8 film prompts promises of boycotts, protests
Prop 8 film prompts promises of boycotts, protests
By Nancy Van Valkenburg (Standard-Examiner staff)

At 2 p.m. Thursday, the 2010 Sundance Film Festival announced that former Utah newsman Reed Cowan would bring his new documentary to the elite festival.

By 5 p.m. Thursday, Cowan learned religious and anti-gay activists were organizing, discussing online whether they should gather at Park City to show their angry opposition to the screening.

Cowan's film is "8: The Mormon Proposition." It is described on the Internet Movie Database, www.imdb.com, as "a scorching indictment of the Mormon Church's historic involvement in the promotion and passage of California's Proposition 8," the proposition that banned same-sex marriage in California.

"I know that it's going to be protested," Cowan said in an e-mail interview from his home base in Florida.

"I just got forwarded a blog threatening boycotts and protests. ... I can tell you thousands of gay-rights leaders from all over the country are going to be marching in counterpoint to the other marches."

7. Sundance?
WTF is that? How about some respected film festival, like the Palm Springs International Film Festival http://www.psfilmfest.org/index.aspx ? I can pretty much guarantee the film will be well received there.

11. Largest?
I can see you copied that from Wikipedia, but the Palm Springs film festival runs longer and shows more films. I suspect that after their homophobia is well publicized, Sundance will have even more difficulty backing their boast.

12. Yes, I copied that
I knew Sundance was big and important, but until I read that Wikipedia article, I didn't realize it was that big. Apart from the question of how to properly measure the size, exposure at Sundance seems to be a huge factor in how well a film does. It's nothing to be dismissed.

I hope the film in question gets shown at other important festivals, including Palm Springs, as well, and goes on to have an impact. (I have to admit I've never heard of the Palm Springs festival, but I know nothing about the world of film festivals, and I'll take your word for its size and importance.)
