Columnist who called Keith Olbermann "the future of news," finds him having a big week
San Francisco Chronicle: It's no news that MSNBC's Olbermann knows how to do news best

Keith Olbermann (MSNBC)

You could say this has been a big week for MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann, but lately they've all been big weeks. It would be difficult to find an anchor or TV personality who has been on a bigger roll.

Certainly not Katie Couric, to name but one.

In fact, in the last year, Olbermann has emerged as a kind of force of nature on television. His viewing audience has continued to rise -- his show is up about 76 percent in the first quarter of this year as compared with last. His profile, however, is off the charts. Olbermann has been on a late-night talk-show binge; he is credited with almost single-handedly making MSNBC relevant (no small feat); and he has re-upped his MSNBC show, "Countdown," for another four years, through 2011. The deal calls for Olbermann to write periodic essays for NBC's "Nightly News With Brian Williams" and have two "Countdown" specials air on NBC.

It was important for NBC News President Steve Capus to lock Olbermann into a sweet deal not only because Olbermann has a history of getting up and walking out the door (ESPN, CNN, Fox Sports and a previous stint at MSNBC), but also because it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the multitalented Olbermann can be used in ways previously unseen with other anchors.

For example, as I noted in November of 2005, "Countdown" would be (or should be) the model for the future of news. The difficulty in making that a reality anytime soon is that people who make these decisions are rooted in old-school notions of what a network newscast should look like, and so when they try to do something revolutionary to it they end up with -- Katie Couric?

No, Olbermann's mix of smarts and snark would soon make "Countdown" one of the few absolutely essential news shows on television. In 2003, when Olbermann agreed to fill in a mere three times on MSNBC's long forgotten "Nachman" show, somebody finally paid attention to the man's myriad talents. Not long after, "Countdown" was born, and it took a turn as a Roman candle once Olbermann started poking fun at the meritless ego and thin skin of Fox showman Bill O'Reilly. Olbermann's star status exploded when he then started eviscerating the dumbassification of this country through the politics of President Bush. Those "Special Comment" riffs caught the attention of what must always be lazily described as "the left wing," and off Olbermann shot as a voice of reason for the left when, prior to that, everyone was sitting mute or meekly inarticulate.

So here television found a polymath who could deliver a news story with authority, skewer idiotic behavior with savage humor (his "Worst Person in the World" segment), be unafraid to have an actual opinion and back it up, and then hit the talk-show circuit and be a witty bon vivant....

(NOTE: The big week? His coverage of Virginia Tech; ranking number 6 in the 10 Most Powerful in TV News 2007, only one of three in-front-of the-camera to make the list; signing on to join "fellow brainiac Bob Costas" for "Football Night in America")

1. Viewers
and ratings would bolster his image. Right now is not in the top tier in any survey.

5. Surveys; Schmurveys....
I have a feeling that will be changing soon, as Keith will be contributing to the Evening News, as well as NBC Sports. Sounds as if you're trying to diminish Keith's accomplishments here; but I don't think it's too presumptuous to say that Keith has single-handedly put MSNBC on the radar for a lot of new viewers. Like any other host, you have to build a following, and he has done that at an amazing rate.

15. Are You A Trends Kinda Guy?
I'm into facts as well Olbermann's trends have been on a steady rise while O'Reilly's have declined...especially in the critial 25-54 demo. Also, MSNBC is not cleared on as many cable systems as Faux or CNN and have always been at a ratings disadvantage. In essence, MSNBC's ratings are reaching all time highs for the network...the fact they can beat both Faux and CNN in any demo in primetime is a far cry from a year ago when there were rumors the networks was going to be merged with CNBC.

I'll welcome you to DU.

16. Welcome on board Mr. Earl
:hi:

If you are comparing the entire universe of TV programming, you are correct. In the world of cable politics/commentary (the one we are interested in), your original post is not.

20. Olbermann beat O'Reilly in the ratings last night in the "money demographics"
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/ratings/the_scoreboard_wednesday_april_18_57429.asp

As for viewers, my husband and I just had MSNBC added to our cable package about 18 months ago. Nov. 1, 2005 to be exact. It was a big day for us. We actually got to watch KO live rather than just reading about it or seeing segments on the internet. We've been avid viewers since then.

We've got friends in KC, MO who don't have MSNBC on their cable packages. At least, that's what evlbstrd claims whenever I call and ask him if he watched Countdown. That's a somewhat major market that MSNBC isn't even available for.

In other words, MSNBC still needs to expand the availability for its network and the numbers will naturally increase for KO.

3. NBC hired him for NFL football commentary.
Smart move...that's going to expose him to a whole segment of the public that will help to drive his nightly program even higher.

4. I see this as an insidious plot...
by the corporate hacks to get KO off of real news and back onto sports where he can do less harm.

10. Don't think so....KO knows the action is in news.
He's willing to do sports, but I think his that world is too artificial and contained for his interests. MSNBC signed Countdown to a 4 year deal recently...they know his show is a winner and he's making money for them.

8. I would love it if KO periodically injects political commentary into his sports analysis....
"That quarter-back has about as much leadership skill as Bush..."

"Wow! That punter should apply for the White House Press Secretary position..."

Stuff like that.

14. He might, but I think his communication skills and general sports knowledge
will endear him to his a-political audience. Once they tune-in and like his commentary style, they are more likely to tune into Countdown to see what he has to say about the daily events. Nothing but goodness here.

22. Re-expose him.
KO was on ESPN TV for a few years (he was one of the reasons I got hooked). I'm sure I'm not the only who remembers him from there. So, him doing football is just reintroducing him to some old sports fans and introducing him to others.

25. This is what got me hooked on Olbermann
I was flipping through channels and heard him do a segment about a new study that showed fish are capable of feeling pain. He read some fish man's, (someone making money off of fishing..like a fishing magazine or something) statement that he could not understand how a fish could feel pain. To which Kieth replied.....(paraphrasing)

"Open your mouth and stick a fish hook through your lip. That's how it feels!"

When I realized that this man actually cares about how fish feel I became a fan - forever.

26. Keith Olbermann & Bob Costas together will have *me* watching football on Sunday nights.
Edited on Fri Apr-20-07 04:08 PM by 8_year_nightmare
These are two intellectual giants, imo, who can make any subject interesting.

My husband & sons have high regard for both. "Countdown" is one program about politics to which they actually pay attention -- no small feat in my household, where the male persuasion, though staunchly Democratic, have to get their political news in small doses. But it's their high regard for Keith that makes them listen.

This is such a good move for Keith. His integrity & intelligence shine through, his humor is very embracing, & it's possible that he's going to suck in all the sports fans who haven't been paying enough attention to issues that matter & have them watching "Countdown".

30. Poor Tweety. Not only is his MSNBC co-anchor Keith on the list...
but, of course, Timmy Russert is number 5 (isn't it rumored Timmy doesn't like Tweety?), and number 10 is a renowned "fake" newsman, Jon Stewart. Those are the only three on-air people on the power list; the rest are execs.
