Then why didn't the neighbor make the statement himself instead of thru HIS attorney?

I guess the neighbor wanted to make sure that any statement made by him via the attorney would not get him into trouble.

4. Because the news media is making thier life miserable
They have the phone and cell phone numbers and are harassing them! The neighbors are understandably frightened and don't know how to handle it all. The lawyer just was on TV and explained why he is the spokesman for them.
