Disgraced S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford is aggressively recruiting candidates to run in Republican primaries against the GOP sponsors of an impeachment resolution against him, sources tell FITS. In targeting these lawmakers – including one who has supported his policies in the past – the governor is said to be “sending a message” to other Republicans who might be contemplating joining the effort to impeach him.
“It’s saying ‘back off,’” one lawmaker familiar with the governor’s recruitment efforts told FITS, noting that Sanford still has a sizable political war chest at his disposal.

http://www.fitsnews.com/2009/11/23/sanfords-friendly-fire/I have no idea how far this will get.
Lest you think this is just gossip, in 2006 Sanford recruited GOP opponents for GOP legislators who opposed his policies. He seriously went after these people in his own party. A foreshadowing of today's events? He succeeded in one way. He made senior members of the Legislature his mortal enemies. The GOP establishment would as soon spit on him rather than pass anything he wanted. (Sen.Jake Knotts would like him drawn and quartered probably)
If you are wondering why they have dragged in impeaching him, it has to do with a several things:
One involves the race for Governor in 2010. Nobody wants to give anybody an advantage such as the lt. governor.
The second is Sanford's vow to fight this to the death. Whether they succeed or not, his lawyers will try to tie up any and all measures in the courts.
Thirdly, the legislature doesn't want to spend this session wasting all their time on a political nonentity. He deserves impeachment, but he would like nothing better than tying the lege up forever. He has enough allies still willing to try this.
