and that usually takes several weeks afterward.

How many stories does one have to be subjected to to realize that the media NEVER has the facts straight - especially the day of the event and several afterward?

First there was the Hal Bop cult in San Diego back 1996. When the bodies of their members were discovered, the media kept telling that they were a fraternity.

Then there's the Columbine Massacre in 1999. That day, we kept hearing about a "trench coat mafia", that the shootings where racially motivated and one student declared her love of God before she was gunned down.

Then you have the Sago Mine Explosion (West Virginia) in 2006. Most of America went to bed the evening of the disaster feeling pretty good. That's because the media told us that the miners were all safe. Until the next day when we all found out that they were far from safe - because they had all died.

The media is a fucking joke, and I am no longer going to get caught up in speculating or making assumptions until the facts are all in. If they ever do come in and rarely do they correct their mistakes.

And that's all I have to say about that.

12. Much of the American media doesn't report accurately even once the facts are in!
Caveat lector in a land of little or no journalistic ethics.

14. It's not entirely the media-- they report the few...
facts they have. They do speculate alot, but that's to fill airtime, and I rarely bother watching or listening to the endless "coverage."

But, I hid over a hundred threads last night with rampant speculation or just people around here who had to put their two cents in. Most were just repeating the latest media "revelations" with the rest inventing their own.

The media is simply the reflection of us.

23. But it sure is popular. And if anyone is too stupid to know...
the difference between fact and speculation as presented on the news, they are too stupid to do much about it anyway.

(For all the complaints about the news around here, a lot of people spend a lot of time watching it.)

21. Oh man, we can't even begin to catalogue the the untruths of 9/11
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 05:13 PM by Wednesdays
I'm not talking the conspiracy theory/anti-conspiracy theory stuff (that's a whole 'nuther forum), but even the generic non-political legends, like the example you mentioned, is widespread even to this day.

The one that I remember the most is this:
