Voter intimidation? I imagine they sent out people to inform voters that Dede has retired from the race, so a vote on the REpublican line would be wasted. But the Republican party is now supporting Hoffman.

A trusted source tells me that as of noon, total turnout in the GOP the swing districts in NJ is significantly outpacing turnout in Democrat districts...Democratic districts may have more voters show up later in the day.

Of course, if more Dems show up later in the day it's not because they had jobs they had to attend to. It's because the union vans showed up late.
