1. Can you say "Won't last long?"
With an economy mostly driven by consumerism, with no jobs it's likely to be a very long climb back up for the economy.

I'm glad the stock market is doing better, but I keep thinking the people benefitting the most from it are the very ones who caused the problem in the first place. :(

28. I've been unemployed since March (and unpaid 10 months prior to that)
I'm completely broke and am a few months away from losing my house.

Any sign of economic recovery is good news at this point. Strike that, it's GREAT news. I need a fucking job, and I need companies to start thinking about hiring again.

Now do you understand why I can't fucking stand the constant barrage of pessimism on my favorite website?

34. I don't happen to believe that saving people's investment PROFITS....
is anywhere NEAR as important as keeping people
employed and IN THEIR HOMES. Keeping families
intact. Keeping people from bankruptcy.

I doesn't help to bail out Wall Street if
those "401K's" will have to be cashed in and
used to keep people's noses above water for
a few months.

52. Tridim, I am in the same boat as you. I was laid off from
a steel company in April because people aren't buying steel. I don't expect to be called back to work in the steel mill until people start buying steel again. The best thing that could happen today to get me back to work is for consumers to feel confident in the economic future and buy stuff. I don't understand why some always seem to hope for the worst even when we have a Democratic President. I don't hate Wall Street so much that I am going to shoot myself in the foot hoping they get burnt.

33. +1 Jobs always lag in an economic turnaround
During a recession companies produce and sell less. Since they sell and produce less they cut their workforce. When the economy picks back up employers are reluctant to hire new workers fearing it may be a false start and they would be forced to cut back again. That is why jobs are the last to recover. I have heard the President warn us many times the unemployment won't peak for several months after the economy starts to recover. I thought that was why we had the Stimulus Plan to help temporarily ease the impact of the job looses. The government paving roads and repairing bridges doesn't create jobs it just makes temporary work. We certainly don't need the government making more government jobs we can't afford the ones we have now.
The same thing happened after the 1992 recession but by the end of the 90's didn't Clinton claim he created 30 million jobs during his Administration and that was after NAFTA? During the Bush Administration we had little or no job growth but we were just coming out of a mild recession in early 2001 when 911 happened and then the current recession started in late 2007. The 2000s were a disaster for pretty much everyone but Wall Street.

61. Hey pal I have been unemployed for 6 months
because people don't buy steel. The only way I will be recalled is consumers have the confidence in our economic future to buy things again. The government doesn't make jobs. When the auto sales and other things that use steel pick back up to a more normal level we will make steel again. I've been in the industry for 40 years it's cyclical.

17. The stock market is meaningless to most people in this country.
It's time we all started figuring out how to provide for our own families outside of the system that those assholes on Wall Street and Madison Avenue have sold all of us.

Time for bartering, growing our own food, lessening our own personal dependence on fossil fuels, etc.

Better to be prepared now for the eventual day when the U.S. becomes a 3rd world country.

39. well had the Dow still been under 7k
as people at DU seem to been bizarrely wishing of late, you'd have a lot fewer companies going public, far fewer raising capital to keep from drowning in debt, filing bankruptcy and laying everyone off, and you'd see an even higher unemployment rate.

Keep in mind the stock market rising helps the party that is in power. If you want a new wave of Republicans entering congress next year, keep wishing for a steep market sell-off.
