Dr. Quentin Young ...
maybe it is just me, but I think it is pretty sad that Conyers' request to invite Dr. Young to the WH summit was denied.

Dr. Young was also the partner of Obama's personal physician of 20 years.

I just saw his picture and think what a shame... so many who represent the business of "for profit interests" were invited and not someone who has worked for decades to try and bring care health care to all.

:(

"Quentin Young (born 1923) is Chicago-based physician who is recognized for his efforts in advocating for single-payer health care in the United States. An activist who opposed the Vietnam War and worked on the Civil Rights movement, Young is best known for speaking out about social justice in the realm of health policy.

Young attended Northwestern University Medical School from 1944 to 1947. He interned at Cook County Hospital in 1947 and did his residency there.<1>

He was a founder and served as National Chairman of the Medical Committee for Human Rights, which was formed in June of 1964 to provide medical care for civil rights workers, community activists, and summer volunteers working in Mississippi during Freedom Summer.<2> MCHR also provide emergency medical care to protesters at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In October of 1968 he was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee about his knowledge of the DNC protests.<3>

Young was Chairman of Medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago from 1972 to 1981.

Young founded Health and Medicine Policy Research Group in 1980, and is currently Chairman of the Board of that organization.

Young was President of American Public Health Association in 1988.

In April 2008, Young retired from his private practice in Hyde Park, Chicago, which he co-ran with fellow activist David Scheiner. He is currently National Coordinator and CEO for Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP).

April 17. 2009, Appointed by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn to Chair the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board..."

3. amen. and Dr. Young is both a great and good man. I've followed his
career for many years, and he's been one of the leaders in the public health field, both in Chicago and nationwide

he's on OUR side

I'm getting to the point where I hate to hear what comes next in the way of 'change we can believe in'

sounds more and more like the dregs of the same PR crock we've been feeding from since Reagan's handlers perfected after learning the hard way during Nixon's first attempt to rule via mass media manipulation

4. Thanks, I cannot help but wonder how many more people would...
be in favor of a strong PO if a few people such as Dr. Young were allowed to attend.

9. i'll say this in the white house's defense. obama has shared many a stage
with the good dr young. i am sure he could recite his speeches by heart. and this is not meant as a slam, just as a fact, that the single payer argument is simple. simple to state, simple to understand, appealing in it's simplicity. but if that is not what you are going to do, few of the parts of it will help with what you are trying to do.

i love dr young. i have heard him, seen him, met him. he is as fine a doctor as there is in this country. but the white house knows every word that he has to say.

11. My reply that I've stated before to others...
How do you win a fight if you silence the harshest critics of those who hold power....

Please do not tell me that you are fighting the entrenched interests when you invite them to the discussions and private meetings and exclude those who have been fighting the For Profit companies for decades.

President Obama calls on Karen Ignagni of AHIP to speak on HC reform.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gTFzG7Kaa4

Imagine if P. Obama had called upon Dr. Maria Angell to speak at the WH summit instead of Karen Ignagni, members of Congress might be pleading for a public option.

Dr. Marcia Angell not invited to attend and therefore not called upon to speak, Conyers asked that two single-payer advocates be invited to attend....Dr. Quentin Young and Dr. Marcia Angell - his request was denied.

Watch the first few minutes of this testimony from Dr. Angell who was not allowed to attend the WH summit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQNphM6xUsE

"The reason our health system is in such trouble is that it is set up to generate profits, not to provide care..."

You do not even have to let them speak, but let the for profit companies know they are also in the room - bargaining power for a strong public option if you will.

If they are excluded from the discussions, the chances of winding up with a weak outcome are increased...IMO.
