The cell phone video of that poor kid getting - literally - beaten to death is sickening
They're showing it on teevee. They blur the bad parts.

What possess these kids to do that? I truly don't understand. That said, I recall being a kid growing up urban. I remember gang fights. I remember the kids from my neighborhood fighting the kids from the next neighborhood just a block or two over. I remember using sticks and bike chains, rolls of coins held in clenched fists.

And none of us over the age of 12.

But killing?

Is the killing accidental? SAre they saying 40 kids have been killed so far this year? That's not accidental. That's an epidemic of cruelty or an outbreak of war.

But mostly it is sickening.

1. It's not "accidental" if you beat someone to death with a railroad tie

That falls somewhere in the category of "But gee, Officer, I didn't mean to twist his head off!"

That dumbass punk just cost Chicago the 2016 Summer Olympics. I hope the judge reminds him of that during sentencing.

6. Which doesn't make sense
As Rio De Janiero has very high crime rates, especially homicide. If the judges does say that to him they are lying. This one incident has nothing to do with where the Olympics are going. Consider this a city in South America has never hosted the Olympics. Maybe that is the reason the Olympics went to Brazil.

7. Duly noted
But the Obama administration, I've noticed, is taking this kid's death pretty hard. Arne Duncan and Eric Holder have now been dispatched to Chicago for some damage control. I can't help but think this may have played a role in the IOC eliminating Chicago in the first round.

9. I'm afraid I agree with the poster, above. The Olympics are going to Rio because they have NEVER ...
.... been held in South America before.

It had nothing to do with these kids.

10. If it wasn't so bad in Rio I'd consider that
Edited on Wed Oct-07-09 09:09 AM by JonLP24
I mean over 2,000(This doesn't include the police number who some are said to be corrupt) people murdered a year is much higher than any of our dangerous cities by a wide margin. I can't imagine one incident would influence when there is so much violence, especially the drug trade wars that go on there(Rio).

3. always happened. no different today.... oh wait. yes it is. until we admit todays
world is different for our kids than the past... there is no way in hell we will even get to the steps of recognizing the issues honestly to address.

we lie

we lie to ourselves all the time, to protect our comfy little world. ignoring the issues. pretending they arent. pretending social structures and conditioning is not effecting us negatively.

what would happen if we actually had to take responsibility for the world we live in

4. Gangs need to be cracked down on and hard,
My god, the attitudes these kids have reminds me of the attitudes of "warriors" in tribalistic societies like in Afghanistan. Obsessions with "honor" and whatnot...

show for a couple minutes in doctors office. we never have these shows on in our house. the kids were sarcastic, disrespectful, had that teen "look" thru out show. teaching our kids that this is how a teen behaves. jsut being a teen

neither of my teens (one just shy) behave like that. i did not behave like that. does not have to be. but kids are conditioned all the experioence of being a teen

13. The "TV Babies." This corp culture encouragement of 'I Got Mine!' has been going on for decades
After all, it suits corporate sensibilities to have a populace largely thinking and behaving in accordance with its overarching aims.

I have a 16 year old son. I certainly don't want to see something so disgusting.

19. I heard it was because of school closures and busing.
They cross those invisible gang territorial lines, parachuting these kids into enemy territory. Not an excuse, but a reason.

20. I vaguely remember a kid or two getting killed
when I was growing up. They were the type of kids who had greasy duck tails and hid booze in their lockers concealed in after shave bottles.

This isn't new. What's new is the 24 hour news cycle that makes certain we hear of every single episode.

It's horrifying and unbearably sad, but it's not new.

I look back at what a wild child I was and wonder how I made it through alive.

22. Exactly!
It's our shameful media that gets some type of sick pleasure from hyping these horrible tragedies. If you look at statistics, violent inner city crime among youths was highest from about 1975 to 1995. It's actually been on decline since then.
