I was in the ER last night....
...but don't worry, this isn't a health care post. It's religious. There was a father in the waiting room explaining to his son, "we are in St. _______'s, which is a Catholic Hospital. The Catholics put Jesus back on the cross after we took him off." WTF? Does that make any kind of sense?

15. I guess it was his tone of voice that irked me.
The other major hospital in town is Baptist-run. The implied message to the child was "We're the REAL Christians".

16. maybe...i can see where you would get that
but even if the guy is a total tool where religious indoctrination is concerned i would guess that live and let live is the best way to go on that one. most christians believe THEY ARE the only REAL christians...otherwise there wouldn't be 300 divisions in the church with more and more coming on a seemingly daily basis.

hope your trip to the ER was uneventful...well, as uneventful as those CAN be...

3. After the protestants took him off.
Prolly explaining to son difference between the family's tradition and that of the Catholics of the hospital.

4. My guess what he means ...

In Protestant churches, Jesus is not on the cross, in Catholic churches, he is.

Maybe his son asked him about a cross that he saw in the hospital.

6. My Catholic MIL taught my two oldest
that "the Jews killed Jesus." Fortunately I heard about it early on and taught them the whole "history" so they could counter her. And they did, and it was sweet.

13. I know only from my kids because she had been instructed
early on not to teach them her beliefs because my ex and I were teaching them ours. Eventually she stopped the theology and kept to simple statements like Jesus loves you, etc. because my daughter especially loves a good argument and the MIL wasn't up to it. By the time my youngest was born she had lost her enthusiasm for the challenge/we visited less often. Since separating from my ex I haven't spoken with the woman at all but I know she believes I am leading my children to Hell. I don't think so.

7. Actually, it does.
Paul:

1 Cor 2:2 "For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified."

Non-Catholics focus on many things. One of the most important is Jesus' resurrection.

Mel Gibson's movie seemed to focus on the torturous aspect of Jesus' final hours.

So the meaning of the father's comment was probably a comment on the difference of focus between protestant and Catholic.

8. It's Even Stranger When You're Not A Christian

My father's last days were spent at a Catholic hospital that had a huge crucifix in the room. Being Jewish, we've always thought of the New Testament as nothing but a best seller. The cross made a very nice coat hook.

9. Seems to be a crude explanation of the difference between symbols, the cross and the crucifix.
Protestants symbolize the cross without a Jesus figure included, and Catholics have a crucifix with the form of Jesus on the cross. A Catholic hospital would display the crucifix.

11. That makes more sense than
Jesus was a masochist.

12. It's not a bad motivator, medically speaking.
It's like, no matter what you're in there for you can look up at the wall and be reminded..."Yeah, but look what this guy went through."

I suppose that might make you feel better or at least guilt you into not complaining about it as much.

14. Protestants focus on the empty cross as in Christ is Risen
Whereas Catholics focus more on Christ crucified and the suffering he endured. Just semantics as far as I'm concerned. I'm a Bapta,Catho,Evangel Christian myself..:)
