104. what we really need is a "Post Nanny" forum for busybodies with nothing better to do
than to worry about what forum someone is posting in. Here's a real simple hint: If you see a subject line/thread title that you don't like, don't click on it. No one is forcing you to click on it. If you have nothing intelligent or constructive to add to the thread, why bother?

Do you even recognize this as the authoritarian, and selfish, behavior that it is? Post Nannies remind me of the classroom narc who told on everyone who talked when the teacher had to leave the room for a few minutes.

Have you taken the time to look at some of the sub-forums here? You'll find that a large percentage of them haven't been active for weeks at a time, some of them even for months at a time. People post in the forum they feel "at home" in, and/or where they think it's going to get the most views. If the mods think it should be posted elsewhere, they have the power and means to move it. I spend 95% of my time on DU here in General Discussion, with the remaining 5% split at approximately 4% in the September 11 forum and 1% reading some threads in the lounge. If I'm going to take the time to post an OP, I'm going to do it where it's going to be seen and read. Why would *anyone* take the time to write an OP, then post it in a forum that hasn't been active in days or weeks, and the threads have 40-50 veiws or so?

2. Make sure to go after the healthiest males with the most points...
...and then say that you're culling out the sick and weak.

That's my favorite.

I find the act of killing an animal for sport disgusting.

However, there is the idea of keeping population numbers down. It is beneficial.

25. Eh, I'm from a family of hunters.
I don't mind it so much when people just say, "hey, I enjoy the hunt and the kill". That's honest. But when people try to frame it as helping the population while specifically looking to take the healthiest members of said population, that pisses me off.

If one is concerned about the weak and diseased, take those animals. Why systematically remove the best genes from the gene pool if your aim is to improve it?

28. No. I just appreciate honesty.
My father has luckily gotten to the point in his life where he'll set up his bait pile and come armed only with his camera.

And my husband doesn't hunt, thank God.

I love nature though. I could easily move into my father's deer camp in Michigan's UP and live there happily for life...if it weren't for the black bears who like to pay *visits*.

I'll bet the colors are just about done there now.

42. Why on earth would hunters go after the sick and weak?
The meat would taste terrible.

Venison's good--it's leaner than steak and tastes better, too.

You don't like meat, that's fine with me--but you're not going to convert me.

30. Where do you hunt? What kind of bait pile do you set up?
My family was mostly trophy hunters (does were off-limits for many years), but they hunted on their own acreage and brought up many pounds of apples and carrots, which was respectable. They were sportsmen.

What about you? Are you a hunter or a sportsman?

11. Not being a hunter or gun enthusiast, I will still wish you luck
My in-laws were avid hunters. Owned a lot property in PA for generations until the parents finally passed on. This was a huge time of year for them. Friends and relatives from all over the East Coast would converge on the farm for deer hunting season. We would go to listen to the last Yankee game of the year (always this weekend) on WABC radio and party with them. And one of the mementos I possess is my now (ex's) deceased Grandfather's 1910 Remington single barrel 12 gauge, it it's green canvas and leather strapped case, in storage, to pass on to my beautiful Daughter when she ever has a family so that maybe it will be put to use again by someone who is a hunter.

Good luck and safe hunting.

Reminds me of the Ron White routine where he talks about his Cousin Ray who's all camo and macho. White's reply was why do you need a bullet that goes 2200fps. "I hit one with a van going 55 mph with the headlights on and the horn blowing. Woooo that's an elusive creature! If ya ever miss one it's because the bullet's going too fast. Slow it down to 55mph, put some headlights and a horn on it and the deer will JUMP IN FRONT of it!"

our park district has over two thousand acres of fields and timber and they allow bow hunters to thin several herds. i live on the edge of the park and have deer walking through my yard at night. during the day the fawns play entertain by playing in the yards.

48. I hope the hunt goes well for you. No hormones, no antibiotics, delicious meat from
Mother Nature's bounty.

It's interesting to hear the comments about not taking the healthiest deer in the herd, but taking the weak and infirm instead. First, just because a buck is bigger than a doe does not mean he is healthier. Second, there are always more does than bucks by several magnitudes. Third, the weak and infirm WILL often be culled by other predators; whereas, the healthy ones will survive and mate again.

Deer are beautiful creatures. We have a couple of herds, as well as a few individuals, that frequent our backyard on a nightly basis. As many as nine different ones in an evening. We put corn out for them and lure them to within ten feet of our glass doors and watch them and the herd dynamic in action. Sometimes the dominant does will get very nasty with their underlings, to the point of spearing them with their pointy hooves. The competition for the corn gets pretty interesting, but mostly the dominant does and their fawns eat first, then what's left goes to those who are lower in the pecking order.

Unfortunately, the population in our urbanized but on-the-edge-of-rural area is growing every year. One early evening in August on my way home from work I counted 26 deer feeding in fields beside the road on a drive of less than three miles.

Gardeners hate them because they are very destructive and don't leave any for the humans. In that case, I always suggest that a few venison hams and some backstrap meat would go perfectly with fresh tomatoes and chard and squash. They are extremely fond of most of the flowers in my wife's flower gardens and our acubas are trimmed back to the stalks.

We co-exist with them and enjoy having them as our neighbors, but in a pinch I wouldn't hesitate to put one or two in the freezer.

Of course, my wife, the animal rehabber would not be too happy with me.

62. My SI use to think they were so pretty
then she came down with limes disease twice. Now, it's "kill those vermin.
Also not a good idea to feed or bait deer. One of the best ways to spread disease, like TB.

I hunt deer for the meat. If cleaned and cooked right, there is not much better to me. I try to do ever part of it. Kill, skin, butcher, cook and eat. I doubt that any loves the animal more than me. But, I understand where that mouth full of food comes from, a living animal that should be respected.

Now, if there are too many deer in the area, I try to shoot a mature doe. She'll make the best mother and most likely have 3 fawns. If the population where I hunt is lower, I'll try to take a year and a half doe. Poor mother skills.

My goal is to some day only eat fish and meat that I have harvested myself. I'm a terrible gardener.

70. The corn feeding wasn't my idea. It started because the deer herd used to come to that
door anyway to eat the flowers and plants. My MIL, who was terminally ill, loved to see them, so my wife started putting corn out. Then we got to the point that we loved to sit out on a lovely evening, under the carport, and watch the herd come up. Of course, they are skittish, but some of them are quite used to us and even bring their fawns up when they're very young.

In this case, it wouldn't matter if we put the corn out or not. They'd still be coming right up in the yard to keep our garden and flowers trimmed.

I know what you mean about the gardening. I have a black thumb. Good thing I"m a halfway decent fisherman.

Good luck in your quest to become self-sufficient. I have a couple of friends who provide most of the meat for their families from their hunting and fishing. But they spend a lot of time in the woods and on the water. Of course, that in itself is good enough reason to undertake such a quest.

85. LOL
When we first moved to The Woods in 2006, we were thrilled to wake up in the mornings and watch the deer in our yard.
We would drink coffee while quietly peeking out from behind the curtains.
We started putting out corn to help them during the Winter.....
...that was before we found out that they would rather eat our roses, fruit trees, and veggies.

NOW, we charge out in the yard blasting air horns, cursing, yelling, and waving out arms to keep these big rats away from our flowers and food.

61. My sisters backyard a couple of days before Thanksgiving '08

She lives in N.E. Pennsylvania on top of a freaking mountain.
Deer are like cute dogs in a trendy neighborhood, they are EVERYWHERE.

I think what some people don't understand is that if not for hunting season they would be overrun with deer.
Five years of no deer hunting, and deer would be the new hood ornament on every single car in rural Pennsylvania.

66. Gun hunt season starts here (Oregon) tomorrow too. Two hunter-related fires this AM.
The first fire did not need a USFS truck. It was undoubtedly a small campfire.
It went down even before I called the DO. I watched the site all day .. notta.

Smoke #2 came up at 08:20 in a big puff and strong column for a while.
Then it became a small column with an occasional puff. I figured it
was a bonfire with campers throwing green pine boughs on it. I called
it in and it was decided to send a fire truck down from Bend. That took
almost and hour and a half. By the time they got there (again, the
location was exactly where I reported) it was long gone. But they did
find evidence of a big bonfire .. properly extinguished.

It is snowing lightly now (7:30 pm) and 29-degrees. Tomorrow morning
will be very interesting. It is the first day of deer hunting season
(guns) and it is going to be very cold. I have reports of many, many
hunters camping in my A/O tonight. There will be lots of campfires in
the morning. But I probably will have reduced visibility in snow, and
that snow will keep down the fire danger in the Deschutes National
Forest.

Some hunters either started their season a day early today or were
practice shooting. With all the LEOs in the forest (USFS Law
Enforcement, Deschutes County Sheriffs, Oregon Dept. of Wildlife, etc)
I would think it is practice shooting. The good new is that it appears
that the USFS COVOPS (not covert operations as I suspected, but the
recreation side of the house that deals with the off-road (OHV)
vehicles) did not open the ATV trail up to my lookout. The day after
the lookout closes is the day to open the ATV trails.

Nick will have a fanfare from my air horn before he goes down in the
morning, and he will be on limited travel restrictions all day. The
Sportsman's' Warehouse in Bend was out of orange dog vests. Nick
doesn't do orange well anyway.

77. Nice butthole attitude. You can "cheer" people on without insulting...
...either directly or indirectly a great number of people who at one time might have been on the same political side.

I'm beginning to wonder about the shrill, hostile, ignorant, levels of hostility aimed at non-meat eaters on this site.

89. Peta does a lot of good work.
They stand up for the voiceless. They fight for animals kept in torture chamber factory farms--animals who cannot turn around in their cages or get any relief from the nonstop excruciating pain they feel for weeks and weeks on end. Animals that have probes inserted into their anuses so they can be electrocuted and animals are skinned alive for fur.

If you think that people who do that hard work are worth laughing at, then you're a small, petty person with little compassion for creatures that hurt and suffer more than you can comprehend.

I find that disgusting and in no way can it be called hunting.

Also going to areas where the animals cannot escape, those "hunting reserves" that are stocked and fenced in...what a joke.

100. My sentiments exactly. It's odd how proud some folks are picking off
a deer at 300ft with what amounts to a sniper rifle. If you sit in a tree with bow in the cold all day just to get one shot, then I certainly respect that since it's actually a challenge.
