Email from the Principal indicating why they will NOT be letting my daughter's school hear Obama.
speech...

President’s Address to America’s School Children:

Last week, the U.S. Department of Education contacted school principals across the nation about plans for President Obama to deliver a back-to-school address to students via the White House website and C-SPAN at 12:00pm EST.

The email stated that President Obama “will deliver a national address directly to students on the importance of education. The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens.”

The HCPSS Office of School Administration has given principals discretion regarding the showing of the President’s message.

We will not be showing the President’s message at Oakland Mills Middle School at the time of the live broadcast. Instead, we will record his message so that staff may view it and decide how/if they can utilize the message instructionally at a later time.

For more information about the President’s address, visit http://www.whitehouse.gov/mediaresources/. Starting this Friday, you can visit http://www.ed.gov/iamwhatilearn/ to find out more. Families may consider recording the message it and viewing it together.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Cynthia Dillon, Principal

Ms. Dillon will be hearing from me.

4. No kidding
That was my first major in college, until I figured out they were mostly a bunch of right-wing fundies who scared me half to death. Switched majors in a big hurry and vowed to watch very carefully anyone in charge of teaching my children.

17. Interesting
I have been teaching for 30 years and can count on one hand the number of right wingers and on one finger the number of right wing fundies I have worked with. The vast majority of educators I know (and I would imagine I know far more than you know) are Democrats and most of us are liberals.

19. That's what I always thought too
Maybe it's the place I went to school? Maybe it's the level I was training to teach (K-3)? No way to tell, but it put such a bad light on teaching that I got out and didn't even think about looking back.

Could be I wasn't meant to teach and this was my excuse for leaving? Who knows? If that is the case, then I wasn't conscious of it at the time.

12. Especially, since bush+cheney busted the Treasury
and the Education Dept was hurting and now we have someone in who actually cares about Education.

So this principle wouldn't bat an eye if mcpalin wanted to tell the kids why they won't be having music and art classes any longer?

2. Why does this school hate America?
I mean, we're at war, after all, and Obama is our Commander in Chief. Where's the patriotism?

6. Sounds like a good plan. This whole thing makes me sick.
It is enough that we have to fight with the foolish right-wing nuts over other issues, but this takes the cake.

How stupid are they that a speech encouraging children to learn should be a threat to their children.
What possible justification can any parent have to disallow a child the opportunity to hear their president talk about the necessity to learn?

The world must be laughing.

15. What's even more f***ed up is that Obama carried our district by at least a 2-1 margin.
And in 2006 all three democratic state delegates from our MD house of delegates carried this district by a 2-1 margin.

Un-f'in-believable.

16. Schools get money based on attendance.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out why Repugs want schools boycotted on speech day.

I can, however, understand why I would keep my child home to hear the speech, or better yet,
tape it and discuss with child.
