Please consider adopting or fostering a pet for those who have lost their homes.
I belong to Craigs List and Freecycle. I cannot offer a home to any more animals, because I already have 8 strays under my wing.

If you can be of any help to folks like this, please consider doing so. Maybe even an arrangement for something temporary, until they get back on their feet again.

The following message broke my heart.

"My heart breaks as I write this, because we have had these three kitties
since they were kittens. We've had to move from a three bedroom rental
house into a two-bedroom apartment, and we must adopt out these three of
our feline family of five.

Goober is about 10 years old; mostly white with black and grey. We've
always called him our fat furball. He is very laid-back and loving;
nothing seems to faze him. He loves to be brushed and petted.

Bitty is 3 years younger, tabby/tortoiseshell and she is a bit skittish.
She loves Goober - and has since we brought her into our home. I'm sure
it would break her heart if she and Goober were separated, but... :(

Peanut is also about 10 years old - maybe 4 or 5 months older than
Goober. She, too, is mostly white, but her patches are mostly a lighter
grey. She is a very calm and loving cat. She would do well in a
household where she is the only cat and can receive the pampering and
loving she deserves.

All three have always been indoor cats, litter-box trained, front paw
declawed and spayed/neutered. They've never been around dogs; I can't
make any predictions as to how they would react in a household with dogs
because I just have no knowledge to share.

I don't know what else to say - but I will answer any questions. If
anyone has knowledge of a fostering programs where I can take my sweet
babies and not chance them being put down in a shelter, I would
appreciate that info."

How sad that people have to give up their companions because of this "recession". Look around, I'm sure there are even more sad stories near where you live.

1. We need a systemic overhaul.
Eventually people will run out of pets and since nobody wants to adopt or foster other people...

2. My rescue org gets 10 phone calls a day from people in/facing foreclosure
begging us to take their animals. It's really quite sad. I don't care to answer the phone much anymore.

5. That's awful.
I'm trying to figure out if I can handle adding another cat because I know that it's bad around here.

3. Please do consider it!
Rescue animals are so rewarding...We adopted two rescue Pyrenees (the big white sheep-guarding dogs) in February. I have never known two such sweethearts. They clearly know they've been adopted and they act out their gratitude every day. Somebody dumped them together in the game lands in deep country in Pennsylvania. Perhaps somebody desperate who didn't know how many breed rescue organizations are out there....Anyway, they've already given back more love than we could ever imagine.
We also have 6 rescue cats. I think they know, too, although cats don't act out gratitude in quite the same way dogs do, but they're sweet in six individual ways as well..
Please do rescue!

8. The town I used to live in (Santa Ana, CA) had a lot of stray dogs running around.
I would see a at least one new one every month or so. Many were pit bulls. I took in a starving eight or nine month old pit bull I found trotting along in the middle of a busy street. She's now nine, and she's the sweetest, healthiest, most fun and playful dog in the world. I walk her to the beach and she goes bodysurfing with me! Taking in a stray is very rewarding.
