Gee, in another 6 months or so.....I'm going to be fifty!

Whoopee! No one will hire me now for the price that I *should* command with my experience. Why should they? 'Experience' doesn't matter - and they don't want to "do it the old way" anyway.....it's a 'new world', dontchaknow......

Gee, I hope that I can manage to hold on for another 15 years until I'm eligible for Medicare. I'm REALLY in the most vulnerable time of my life right now, I realize.

Too old to get affordable health insurance.....too old to be considered for a job that might pay for my health insurance.....and 15 years away from "single-payer" Medicare.

I hope I "make it".....wish me luck! (I'm going to be fighting for more than *luck* though ...... God gave us a good brain, we all should use it well ;-) )

8. ON THE BRIGHT SIDE . . .

(there is one, you know), 50 often brings with it a clarity and understanding you've never had before. You have enough life behind you and, assuming it hasn't been a sheltered one, there's not a whole lot that the world can throw at you that is going to devastate you. Speaking from experience I find that I require less, that I've learned how to find happiness and peace (I know some on this board will snicker at that but no one here knows me IRL) in the simplest of places and circumstances. I'm the most creative I've ever been and because I've been practicing my arts for so long, I'm at the top of my game (at 54). For me, a key is to NEVER stop learning new things. I've recently become obsessed with Middle Eastern cooking (anyone out there have a SUCCESSFUL hummus recipe?) and am having an absolute blast!

It's all basically a glass half empty/half full kind of thing. Wait until you are actually IN your 50's, walk around for awhile. You may gain a different perspective.

9. I really love being 50

That's what a coworker told me when I was complaining about turning 50 soon. Perhaps she found it liberating, like she did not have to hide the gray hairs or be embarrassed by the wrinkles anymore. Or maybe she considered it a badge of experience and wisdom.

I'm not sure why she said it, but it sure made me feel so much better about turning 50.

10. I'm 60, and I recently got a new job.

Not a great one, but it will pay the bills. Although to listen to the complaining here I am apparently the ONLY person in the entire country over the age of 50 to have gotten a new job in recent months.

11. The 50s decade was my best all around

I'm 61 and facing a layoff. I feel like the rug was yanked right out from under me. Yet I've found that each new decade brings something really good with it. It's almost as if old people have been keeping a secret until you discover it for yourself.

I'm getting a folding chair, a blanket to keep over my knees and a McCain mask.

All day long I'm going to yell, "You kids get offa my lawn." I plan to do it whether there are children there or not.
