Web citizens trying to kill Internet Explorer 6 (CNN)
By John D. Sutter
CNN

(CNN) -- Some Web designers are staging an online revolt against an old version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, which they say is hampering the ability of the Web to move forward in a cool and interactive way.

The designers say Internet Explorer 6, which was released in 2001 and since has been updated twice by Microsoft Corp., is crippling the Internet's potential and slowing down the online experience. They also blame IE 6 for giving webmasters a collective headache, because they have to write special "hacks" into Web code to accommodate an outmoded browser.

An estimated 15 to 25 percent of people still use IE 6 as their portal to the Internet, according to two Web monitors.

In recent months, several Web companies have launched sites devoted to the idea of undermining or killing Internet Explorer 6. The most recent site, called "IE 6 No More," has gained momentum this week on social-media sites like Twitter and Digg in part because a number of respected Internet start-up companies have signed onto the campaign.

The "IE 6 No More" site provides Web developers with a piece of code -- an online hurdle, essentially -- they can install to encourage Internet users to download a new browser before coming back to the site.

1. I'm always surprised that people still use IE when Firefox is available.

7. Yeah, I use Firefox and have long refused to use Explorer.
I don't like the idea of forcing people to download something, but if use of IE6 hurts the rest of this, that should be explained as a reason to not let those using IE6 to visit a site.

6. Firefox could probably lure in more diehard IE users if they
pushed their IE emulator.

I have to use it to access the live audio feed that I use to listen to my footie matches, since the company that developed the program still use IE as a default browser and the page won't work in Firefox without the emulator.

With the emulator it works just fine - which is good, because I would open IE to hear my matches even though I think it's the worst piece of *&%$ out there. (Footie addiction is a sorry thing, indeed . . .)

My dad was a diehard IE user until I showed him how he could use the emulator to 'make things look like IE'. Now he uses Firefox (and hardly ever uses the emulator because he doesn't need to do it . . . but he doesn't really realize that he's not using it as much as he did when he first switched).

It is frustrating to still see so many companies and schools (schools are the WORST) still using IE as the default and writing their code in a way that other browsers can't access all the content.

9. Schools, libraries, and other institutions that rely on public funding ...
because they seldom have the resources to devote to such things until it simply can't be avoided any longer. Any university IT dept has a long backlog of things that need to be done ASAP. If replacing the browser on every single machine in the computer labs can be postponed, it will be. Sadly, that's just the way it is.

8. It's really got to go
A few months ago, a little Flash game I made ended up appearing in a story by CNN's Jeanne Moos:

I could tell by seeing my site on her browser that sadly, Ms. Moos was still surfing with IE 6.

See the Image/Page title at the top? See the big white space around that title? It's not supposed to be there. It's a PNG image with a transparent background. IE won't render PNG images - one of the many reasons IE 6 needs to die.
