Caught On Camera: Child Dragged Through Ga. Store On Leash

August 5, 2009
ROME, Ga. -- A Verizon Wireless employee captured shocking video of a mother dragging her child through the store by a monkey backpack leash.

Means, of Gaylsville, Ala., told police that she suffered from lupus and pneumonia and that her son was refusing to walk and because of her health problems, she could not pick him up. According to the report, Means said her son liked being “pulled around by his monkey.”

-------

Green said the child had a red bruise mark on the left side of his neck from the backpack strap.

------

Means was charged with cruelty to children and taken to the Floyd County Jail.

1. Sometimes a parent gets desperate, and if she's ill I wonder where her support system is...
Sick, fatigued, with a misbehaving little kid who's no doubt stressed himself -- it really sounds like a case for a social worker and some parenting classes. I can't judge, not knowing a whole lot more.

3. I never appreciated how lucky I was as a young mom
having both grandmas nearby and a sister in law and a husband who all stepped up when I needed a hand. There but for the grace of God or Someone/thing.

5. My mom and (ex)husband were both unsupportive. You have no idea.
But as my son's girlfriend says of crap situations: It is what it is. And thank God it was a long, long time ago now.

dragging him. Wonder how far she dragged him.

14. I agree.
Her claim about being ill was but one excuse she offered. One need only consider context -- what store she was in, to start with -- to understand her need to find an excuse.

11. Hmm.....I don't know what to say
Some kids do like to be dragged around like that. And sometimes, if they act up and pull the "I fell down and I'm staying down" routine you might have to do this.

But.

She wasn't even looking at him and it didn't seem like she was being playful. She looked like the typical in their own world shopper pulling a carry-on roller. He almost hit his head on that cabinet, too.

12. From the link to the video and article..someone writes

I know this woman and something HAS been done. We have found out since that incident that he is allergic to the medicine that he was on at the time for an ear infection. He is very hard headed and strong willed and wears her down. She DOES have these illnesses, she went to jail and was not givien any of her necessary meds and has had a relapse because of this. Someone should have at least tried to assist her, not comdemn her because when she did try to pick him up he kicked and fought her and gave her bruises. Try walking a mile in someone elses shoes before you judge them. DFAC has been to her home and her mother's home as well and has cleared them. Stupid Floyd county made a mountain out of a mole hill.
