Missouri car dealer offers free AK-47 with new truck
BUTLER, Mo. | Buy a truck and get a free AK-47 gun.

That's the deal a Missouri truck dealer is offering new customers who buy a pickup truck in August.

Mark Muller, owner of Max Motors in Butler, says he knows people will be bothered by the promotion.

But not to worry, Muller is not handing out free guns. Instead, he will give buyers a voucher to use at a gun store after they obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon.

The AK-47 is an upgrade on a previous promotion in which Muller gave away vouchers for the price of a Caltec pistol.

The retail value of an AK-47 is $450, but Muller says customers can spend their voucher on the gun of their choice.

8. I copied the headline word for word
cause so many here claim there is no such thing as an AK-47 or that we don't understand what that is. Maybe someone can explain what this gun is and why the hell anyone in Butler, MO needs one.

What's next? Buy a van and get a missile launcher for your front yard?

14. The thing is, the rifles being offered are not really AK-47s
They are civilian semiautomatic knock-offs of the AK-47, which is a selective-fire military weapon.

Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 01:08 PM by slackmaster
I don't believe a Missouri concealed-weapons permit can be used to conceal a rifle.

35. He's probably just pro-CCW. The $450 certificate can be used to buy any firearm.
I agree that requiring a CCW to buy an AK-47 clone is a strange promotion, but since he's offered a Kel-Tec as a promo in the past, he's probably just using different guns in his ads to appeal to a wider range of people.

You can't have one of those without a class III license. Comparing these AK's to the real thing is apples and oranges.

16. AK-47 purchased legally in the US
is not automatic, it's just a cheap, rugged, rifle.

That is unless you have a permit for an automatic weapon. But those are pretty hard to get.

49. I;d bet that the CCW has more to do with
his customers proving that they know how to use a gun safely than to 'actually' conceal the weapon.

If he (his dealership) gives some dope a gun, and the dope uses the gun improperly and someone is killed, I'd bet that his car dealership would be fighting lawsuits left and right. If, however, he requires that his customers obtain a CCW than they have proved that they at least know how to use the weapon, and would help the dealership cover it's ass.

I'm not sure, but that's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

If he's trying to get more people to get their CCW (no problem there) wouldn't it make more sense to give away a voucher for a handgun?

Edit: on rereading it seems it can be used for any gun. I imagine he picked the ak-47 because it is likely to get peoples attention.

Isn't it tougher to get a concealed weapon permit?

13. Yes it is more difficult to get a CCW than it is to merely buy a gun
but it's also not required for owning an ak-47, as it can't really be concealed. I'm not sure about his motivation here.

There was an ad on TV a few months back for a local jeweler who was giving away a free shotgun with the purchase of an engagement ring.

Hell, the grand prize in my county snowmobile club's annual raffle has traditionally been a Deer rifle or a hunting shotgun.

One of the VFW posts here also has a gun raffle every year, with the proceeds going towards honor guards for veterans' funerals.

36. There's really no difference between an AK-47 clone and a "hunting rifle".
Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 04:15 PM by MercutioATC
Let's use the "hunting rifle" that Guitar Man talks about below:

This is a Remington 750 Woodsmaster. It's a gas-operated semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine, chambered (by guitar man's preference) in .270.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is a Saiga AK-47 rifle. It's a gas-operated semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine, chambered in 7.62x39.

The .270 typically uses a heavier bullet, has a higher muzzle velocity and higher muzzle energy.

AK-47's are not very common as it's been illegal to import them since 1968 and illegal to manufacture them in country since about 1986.
