A 30-year-old woman who died at Florida Hospital's Altamonte Springs campus early Tuesday was Central Florida's first swine flu-related casualty.
The woman was admitted earlier this month with pre-existing respiratory conditions, said hospital spokeswoman Samantha O'Lenick.
"Even though most cases of swine flu have been mild to moderate, all flu viruses have the potential to be serious. Everyone should remain vigilant in helping to prevent the spread of the disease," she said.
At an afternoon press conference today, Dr. Scott Brady of Florida Hospital Centracare cautioned "all people who have high risk conditions to see their primary care physicians."
Those pre-existing conditions include chronic heart or lung disease, immunodeficiencies, diabetes, pregnancy, and those over 65.
Brady added that what in normally healthy people is a 2-5 day influenza can be "very dangerous in someone with high risk factors."
Although seasonal influenza has begun to wane, Brady said it is possible the swine flu will continue into the next regular flu season. He said Florida has sporadic pockets of swine flu, according the Centers for Disease Control. "You no longer have to travel to a foreign country to get the H1N1 (swine) flu," he said.
Brady said there may be two kinds of flu vaccine for the next flu season: One that fights the three most common strains of flu, and another specific to the swine flu.
"We'll know more about that in the months to come," he said.
Brady said the patient died in the hospital. O'Lenick said the hospital has procedures in place to protect employees and patients. She and other health officials also reminded the public to use proper health precautions, including covering a cough or sneeze with your arm, washing hands thoroughly, and stay home or consult a health care professional if you experience flu-like symptoms.
This is the second confirmed swine flu-related death in Florida. A 9-year-old Boy In Miami-Dade County died June 15. There are 562 probable and confirmed cases statewide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I don't think the hospital did it's job!! They should have tested her for swine flu right away and DIDN'T! She was in the hospital over a week before anyone even knew she had swine flu. It makes me upset to know that all the nurses and such where taking care of her and had NO idea. They should have went about this differently. She was my friend, I feel if they did things different maybe she would still be here. Thanks for listening to my rant.
Great, now all the nurses that took care of her have been exposed and will spread it further because they don't stay home when they are sick. It drives me insane. If a sickly-appearing nurse enters your room, kick her out and demand another one. I am a nurse, and I stay home when I am sick. Others do not because all they care about is their paycheck, and the employers get ticked when they are short staffed. Stay home sickly health care providers!!!

From what I hear on the inside is that 2 floor nurses who took care of her are now hospitalized. One came into the ED in acute respiratory distress, fever & vomiting. Supposedly this nurse is on ventilator support & might have been transferred to FL South. I haven't heard anything on the news about it, but then again this story is just breaking.
Are you kidding me? This makes me really sad.

Just to clear this up...They did test her for swine flu right away and they did know about it right away. Just because you didn't know right away doesn't mean the rest of us didn't know about it already. Please don't continue to speculate, the only ones who know the real story are her family. We love her and miss her dearly. Comments posted
