Chris Matthews, for all his faults, is the perfect counterweight to Joe. I saw Joe on Hardball a few weeks ago to hock his book. Matthews laid into him. (Paraphrasing...)

CM: "If you think the GOP should be social libertarians, then why do you want to ban abortions?"
JS: "Exactly, we should stop pushing for a federal ban on abortions. It's none of the federal government's business."
CM: "So, you wouldn't vote to ban abortions?"
JS: "At the state level, yes. States should be able to ban abortions, just not the federal government."

Is there any clearer example of a complete lack of principle? Either abortion is a murder (in which case it should be banned), or it is not (in which it should be available to anyone seeking one within certain legal boundaries). Trying to create a figleaf of federalism will just undermine the principles of both sides.
