1. I know what you mean
I think it's important that we as a people
do something in solidarity with the people
of Iran.

13. "we as a people"
That's a very good point. As individuals, we can support the Iranian protesters. But as a government, the US should stay out of it. Obama seems to be reacting sensibly. I have mixed feelings about Congress condemning the crackdown. On one hand, i understand why they did it. But they are part of the government and should not have issued an official reaction.

It's an Iranian matter. All we can do is express our support as individuals, perhaps donate to humanitarian aid efforts, if any.

2. We're not supposed to do anything
If the people of a nation want democracy, it is up to them (and not people elsewhere) to make the sacrifices necessary to get it and to keep it.

5. The candidates they support the Islamic Republic and do not propose a democracy.

All of the candidates were approved to run by the top Islamic clerics including the "Great Leader".

4. What are the political demands of the protesters?
I know they want a new election. But, what do they want the candidate they support to do should he be elected?

9. How Many Iranians Fought In The American Revolution...
It was our messing around with the politics in that country that led to the rise of Khomeni in 1979. True revolutions come from within, not from without. We tried it in Iraq and Afghanistan...see how well that's going?

11. We could fight for ours.
Instead of planting ourselves in front of the TeeVee and watching the latest episode of "Chaos in the ME", we could show our support and encouragement by taking or own country back.

Just a thought.

20. +1 Well said!
If we really want to help them, we need to defeat our own fearmongers and warmongers and corporatocracy.

12. very disturbing
my greatest fear is that Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Khamenei will prevail.

The only way for this revolution to succeed is if the police and military join in. I wonder what's going on with that ...

Edited on Sat Jun-20-09 05:29 PM by liberalmuse
As much as it hurts to watch this, the Iranian people have to do this without our help or else it will not ever be considered legitimate. We can also watch and learn. I really do think a lot of oppressed people around the world who are able to watch are taking note. We are in a very important historical time right now because we are at another crossroads. Where we go from here is up to all of us.

17. We can fight for freedom here in the U.S. in the face of Faux News/ Beck/Rush et al.
They want to take our nation from us.

We can stand up for decency by standing against them.

18. Some things tech folks have been doing:
Retweet their messages.
Mirror their facebook status.
Create open proxies for them to use, and/or publish access details to other proxies, so the IRG plays whack-a-mole.
Spread their source images and video, so it can get to media outlets.

19. THE most important thing you can do is to resist and fight back against any calls to attack Iran.
When the neocons and warhawks start banging the war drums for bombing Iran because "we can't negotiate with this regime" what will you do then? Will you fall for the propaganda, or will you stand firm for peace?

Know that when a nation is under attack by a foreign power, it gives their hardliners even more power. If you want to support the forces of democratization in Iran, make sure you stand firm for diplomatic engagement and against military action.
