'My interview with Scott Roeder's dad: 'Scott would not kill a fly!'"

“Scott would not kill a fly,” John Roeder replied. “He won’t step on a worm. So how could he possibly, unless he was being used by somebody, be planning anything that would take human life?”

Today, Scott Roeder is being bars awaiting the filing of charges in Sunday’s gunshot slaying of Dr. George Tiller.

But it was his anti-government sentiments that led to Scott Roeder's being arrested in April 1996, when the Shawnee County sheriff’s office found ammunition and a blasting cap in his car after stopping it because it didn’t have a legal license plate. Instead, the car bore a plate indicating the driver was a “sovereign” citizen and immune from law. Roeder was subsequently convicted of criminal use of explosives before the Kansas Court of Appeals overturned that conviction.

I spoke two days after his 1996 arrest with Scott Roeder’s father, John Roeder, who was 68 at the time and would live another four years.

The article about my interview ran in The Topeka Capital-Journal on April 19, 1996, which happened to be the first anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing.

I quoted John Roeder as saying his son was an all-around good guy who got in over his head when he became involved with an anti-government group about three years earlier.

John Roeder told me he was mystified as to why his son was carrying explosives in his car. My article quoted him as saying he took consolation in the fact nobody had been physically hurt.

The article ended with a direct quote from John Roeder.

“Maybe, as a friend of mine said, this will be the extreme shock that’s going to get him back on the right track,” he said.

"being used by somebody" seems to me an excuse by people who want to believe their own children/spouse or friends are better people than they actually are.

no license and no insurance.

And yet his conviction on having enough explosives to bomb something was overturned because supposedly the police did an unlawful search.

I think the justice system in Kansas should be investigated.

but a Kansas City station just showed an interview with the ex-wife, who said he had been unraveling for quite a long time. Apparently there is also a 22 y/o son who is having a rough time with this, since he just saw his father on Friday and realized after the fact that this was his goodbye.
