Gov. Arnie's new California budget wouldn't require shelters to keep animals alive *at all*
From SF Gate:

(05-29) 12:31 PDT Sacramento -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's finance
officials detailed an additional $3 billion in budget cuts today that
would eliminate state funding for school buses, allow only severely
disabled Californians to receive in-home services and suspend state rules,
such as requiring animal shelters to keep strays alive for a certain
number of days.

The additional cuts, which also include further reductions to K-12
education, are designed to close a deficit that is expected to grow to
$24.3 billion through June 2010.

The governor's latest plan also includes 5 percent pay reductions for all
state employees except Legislators, their staff and state court workers.

5. While I don't really care for arnie

I think he promised a big game and had no real idea WTF he was doing, California's got a F*CKED UP proposition and property tax setup.

They wanted to do a California like prop thing in Arizona and I voted F*CK NO! It went down in flames.

Besides, you could have voted for more taxes to save sh*t, but most didn't care, and they got voted down by 10% of the voting population. Democracy in ACTION!

7. California is broke because its own voters voted to keep it that way.
They've refused to allow any tax increases by the margin that they've required (2/3 vote, so now they'll have to live with the consequences. Except the wrong people will be the ones hurting.

If we bail out California, we're sending the wrong message to states with irresponsible tax systems. I don't know what the solution is.

19. GM is broke because it's own management worked to keep it that way.
If we bail out GM we're sending the wrong message to corporations with irresponsible management.

Banks are broke because... etc.

21. We need to overturn the 2/3 approval requirement for new taxes.
It gives the Republicans in our legislature too much power. Some of them have made a dogmatic pledge to their Republican party to never vote for tax increases and held our whole legislature hostage over it.
We really need to overturn that rule, especially when Republican legislators in California will uphold their dogmatic pledge whatever the consequences.

I voted down the slap dash provisions to lock in regressive taxes and spending levels in our recent special election.

We need more lasting change that comes from overturning that 2/3 rule for new taxation.

10. California is going down the toilet.
The one thing it had going for it was tolerance, but that is now shot to hell. What happened? I think California has been volunteered to be a case study in how to totally fuck a good thing up in a few short years. It's sad to watch.

12. So how many of you complaining voted in the special election?
Edited on Fri May-29-09 10:47 PM by nadinbrzezinski
how many of you are willing to pay HIGHER taxes?

See, this is coming because Californians love services, but not to pay for them.

I am sorry... but perhaps this state will finally get it, and do what needs to happen... or go down in quality of life to Mississippi level.

Sounds heartless? I know personally people who will suffer due to this. But the reality is that at every chance we get we keep voting for more services, but not the taxes to pay for them

13. Breaks my heart
Does this mean that if a pet gets out, and its picked up, there won't be any time for the owner to check in with the shelter to look for their pet? If that's the case lots of families will lose their pets. I wonder if the animals with microchips will be kept long enough for their owners to be contacted. At least then, a family would have some way to protect their pet.

18. "except legislators, their staff, and state court workers."
I have no civil words to use to express my opinion of AS.

How much money will wholesale slaughter of homeless pets save?

When will he discover that quickly "releasing" homeless humans is also a cost savings?
